About the Department

This position is responsible for the operation, repair, and maintenance of the City’s Water treatment facilities and distribution systems. 

Position Duties

  • Operate, inspect, maintain, repair, and build components of the supply pumping and storage system, including chemical handling, pumping equipment, electrical, and building maintenance.
  • Operate, inspect, maintain, and repair the water distribution system and components including mains, valves, water taps, service lines, fire hydrants, pumps, and storage.
  • Operate, inspect, maintain and repair the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition System (SCADA).
  • Collect samples and perform tests for water quality analysis.
  • Investigate service concerns and interact directly with utility customers and the public.
  • Utilize a variety of equipment and tools, such as an excavator, backhoe, end loader, bobcat, hydro stop, tapping machine, shovels, wrenches, power saws, jackhammers, trenching equipment, and other related items.
  • Troubleshoot, repair and report equipment malfunctions and process abnormalities.
  • Required to work scheduled overtime for weekend and holiday well checks and will respond to emergency situations and support other city departments/divisions in the abatement of emergency situations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent. 
  • Five years of experience in Public Works and/or the construction industry.
  • Illinois class B Water Supply Operator or Operator-in-Training license issued by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA), or receipt within 18 months of hire.
  • Specific knowledge of Ion Exchange, HMO Filtration, Iron Removal, and Chemical Addition.
  • General knowledge of water supply, pumping, storage and distribution systems and associated maintenance and repair methods, procedures, and techniques and the operation and maintenance of machinery, equipment, and tools.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills to interact with co-workers and the public.
  • Class A Commercial Driver’s License or acquire within six months of hire (in house training available).
  • Ability to work under varying environmental conditions, including working in confined spaces and lift to 82 lbs.
  • Respond to emergencies 24/7, reporting no later than 60 minutes after the call-in.
  • Background check (including fingerprinting), physical, functional capacity evaluation, and drug screen.

Pay range is per the Teamster's Collective Bargaining Agreement with starting pay commensurate with experience.
