The School of Biosciences are looking for a Support Technician to join the Facilities, Stores, Safety and Operations team.
In this role, you will:
- Have a varied working schedule with responsibilities in a range of technical areas
- Lead on specific aspects of the team’s work, which covers the School’s Stores facility, PAT testing and safety compliance, providing manual assistance and general duties to support the operations of the School.
The role will be based in the School of Biosciences within Sir Martin Evans Building but on occasion duties may require also working in School of Biosciences areas in Main Building located on Museum Avenue and the Hadyn Ellis Building located on Maindy Rd.

This position is full-time (35 hours per week) and open-ended.

Salary: £25,249 - £26,093 per annum (Grade 3). Please note that it is not expected that we will appoint above the bottom of the grade, except in exceptional circumstances.

Job Description
This role is to provide efficient technical support for the effective running of the school’s technical services team. This will include leading specific aspects of the team’s work, which covers the School’s Stores facility, PAT testing and safety compliance, providing manual assistance and general duties to support the operations of the school.
MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Participate actively within the work team, setting an example and showing a flexible approach to delivering team results
- Plan and manage small projects ensuring the effective use of resources
- Provide efficient and effective operational service for the School’s Stores facility, including monitoring, maintaining and reviewing stocks of identified items, compiling order requisitions for processing, receiving, checking and receipting deliveries, distributing specific items, such as gas cylinders, to requesters as appropriate and maintaining appropriate records and files
- Provide a counter service and prepare all materials and equipment as necessary for customers use and ensure area of responsibility is kept clean and tidy
- Undertake stock control, ensuring adequate security and levels of stock are maintained and stock is distributed as required
- Deal with routine enquiries from internal and external customers in a professional manner, following established procedures, referring complex enquiries to relevant staff members, ensuring all relevant facts and information needed is recorded and passed on
- Carry out Portable Appliance Testing within the School of Biosciences
- Carry out compliance and maintenance checks within the school, involving building safety checks, fire checks, local exhaust ventilation checks, Salto lock updates, first aid kit checks
- Assist with disposal of various waste streams, including WEEE, confidential waste, recycling, clinical waste, clearance of rooms and general housekeeping
- Ensure there is a supply of clean lab coats for all areas of the School, by making use of the two laundry facilities
- Assist with delivery of cryogenic gasses, and deliver gas cylinders to the point of use safely
- Use a university vehicle to deliver samples and scientific equipment across the university campus, understanding the importance of safety and confidentiality when undertaking duties
- Use the School’s forklift truck as and when required to move large items in relation to stocks and orders for the School
- Assist with room moves, both offices and laboratories, carry out small maintenance tasks and general house keeping
- Assist in the maintenance of routine records, updating databases and analysing routine data/information as required
- Ensure that an understanding of the importance of confidentiality is applied when undertaking all duties
- Abide by University policies on Health and Safety and Equality and Diversity
- Perform other duties occasionally which are not included above, but which will be consistent with the role
- To be a proactive and collegial member of the School’s administrative and technical support services.

Essential Criteria
Qualifications and Education
- NVQ 2/GCSE A-C or equivalent qualification/work related experience
- Significant experience working in technical support role
- Proficient in the use of appropriate IT packages (Microsoft office)
- Experience of workplace health and safety legislation, guidelines and good practice
- Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with a wide range of people
- Evidence of working well as an effective team member, providing advice and guidance to other team members where necessary
- Ability to use initiative in solving problems and responding to queries ensuring compliance with standard procedures and practices
- Ability to work on own initiative and unsupervised to deadlines, planning, organising and setting priorities for own work, as well as managing small projects as appropriate
