At Mahaska Health the primary role of the Laboratory Courier will be picking up and delivering specimens, reports, and supplies to Mahaska Health alternate locations (clinics) or clients. The position will serve as a personal contact and a key representative of information and customer service to Mahaska Health providers and clients and contribute to patient care by timely delivery of specimens, reports, and supplies.

Performs the timely pickup of blood, body fluid, and pathology specimens from Mahaska Health clinics and laboratory clients. Prompt delivery of those specimens to Mahaska Health laboratory. Delivers patient reports, laboratory supplies, interoffice mail, office supplies, laundry, X-ray, Pharmacy, and other items/supplies to Mahaska Health clinics and laboratory clients.

Essential job functions include but are not limited to:
  • Picks up and delivers specimens, reports, and supplies by prescribed schedule and route to clients and Mahaska Health clinics in compliance with universal precautions, bloodborne pathogen guidelines, and Department of Transportation Biological Specimen Transportation rules.
  • Demonstrates initiative to improve the quality of customer service by striving to exceed customer expectations.
  • Maintains specimen integrity and safety by appropriately storing and transporting specimens in the correct storage containers and temperature so those specimens are not compromised.
  • Maintains vehicle in clean, neat condition, audits routine maintenance and informs supervisor of problems and needed repair of vehicle.
  • Adheres to all laws (such as speed limits) and safety requirements for driving.
  • Performs computer operations and order entry duties using electronic medical record (EMR) and laboratory information system (LIS), ensuring accuracy and completeness.
  • Faxing reports as appropriate.
  • Receives specimen into LIS.
Job Requirements include but are not limited to,
  • Minimum High School graduate or equivalent.
  • Must be able to operate a motor vehicle safely, driving up to 100-300 miles per day.
  • Driving may occur during weather-related conditions (snow, rain) and will be evaluated for travel safety.
  • Required to have a valid driver’s license and proof of good driving record.
  • Required to have limited liability insurance; coverage limit be $100,000 Each/ $300,000 Aggregate or $300,000 Combined Single Limit.
  • Must be able to frequently get in and out of the vehicle.
  • Must present a customer-friendly appearance and demeanor.
  • Able to work with multiple scheduling demands.
  • Deliveries and specimen pick-ups occur daily (Sundays – Saturdays).
  • Potential to come into contact with hazardous materials during transport and delivery (dry ice, drugs, etc.).
