About the Department
Team Gilbert has an exciting opportunity for a reliable, safety-minded professional to join our Water team as a Utility Locator. This is hands-on, outdoor work where you'll play a critical role in keeping our community's infrastructure safe and operational. As a Utility Locator, you'll spend your days in the field identifying and marking underground utilities—water lines, sewer, fiber optic cables, storm drains, and more—before any digging begins. You'll use specialized locating equipment, read blueprints and maps, and work directly with contractors and crews to prevent damage to Gilbert's underground infrastructure. This role reports to the Water Utility Supervisor and requires someone who takes pride in doing quality work, works well with others, and is committed to safety on every job.
- Locate Gilbert-owned underground utilities
- Assist internal and external customers to resolve underground conflicts and issues
- Identify inconsistencies in the Geographic Information System and plan review
- Conduct damaged utility reports
- Perform and enforce Arizona Revised Statutes Law
- Utilize Global Positioning equipment
- Work in confined spaces when needed

Position Duties

- High School Diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.)
- 3 years of experience interpreting project plans, blue prints, plant maps, as-builts, or related materials, using electronic locating equipment, working according to Arizona Revised Statutes Law
- Any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work
Any equivalent combination of experience and training that fulfills the responsibilities for the role will be considered.
Required licensing/certifications:- Valid AZ Driver's License;
- Arizona Department of Environmental Quality Grade I Water Distribution within one year of hire.
This position requires a pre-employment physical and drug screen.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions for this position include: This role involves working primarily outdoors in varying weather conditions, as well as exposure to confined spaces and hazardous environments. Physical demands include regular lifting (occasionally up to 50 lbs and frequently up to 20 lbs), climbing, kneeling, and other manual tasks. The position operates on a schedule of four (4) ten-hour shifts per week.
