About the Department

Operates various trucks and equipment assigned to the Solid Waste and Recycling Department. The individual will provide pick up of recycling materials or refuse collection. Hauls and unloads refuse at the landfill or recyclables at the recycling plant. The individual may also be required to operate forklifts, skid steer loaders, and other equipment assigned to the recycling facility: Performs preventative maintenance on equipment. Reports complaints to Supervisors.

Position Duties

  1. Operates vehicles and equipment assigned to this department; Front load overhead packer, rear load packer, automated side loader, pickup truck, bobcat, forklift, and other trucks assigned to the department.
  2. Supervises assigned helpers, ensuring orderly collection of refuse and recyclables and customer satisfaction.
  3. Responsible for ensuring the collection of refuse and recycling following the department guidelines and city ordinances.
  4. Hauls refuse to landfill and unload contents of the vehicle.
  5. Hauls and unloads recycling materials at the recycling plant or other designated area.
  6. Performs preventative maintenance on vehicles and equipment including cleaning and sanitizing.
  7. Report equipment malfunctions and problems to the Shop Supervisor.
  8. Report complaints from citizens, problems, or unusual situations to the Supervisor.
  9. Represent the department and the City of Florence in a friendly, tactful, and courteous manner.
  10. This department may require the employee to perform a variety of other assigned duties.
  11. Shifts may vary according to the needs of the city.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Must have or obtain a Class B commercial driver's license with air brake endorsement within 6 months of hire date.
  2. Must have excellent records on safety and attendance.
  3. High school graduate, GED certificate, or experience in a related field.

Other Qualifications

  1. Knowledge of the City of Florence streets.
  2. Knowledge of traffic safety rules and regulations.
  3. Knowledge of preventative maintenance for vehicles and equipment.
  4. Ability to learn department rules and regulations.
  5. Ability to use two-way radio using FCC rules and regulations.
  6. Ability to drive in adverse conditions.
  7. Ability to handle customer complaints in a tactful and courteous manner.
  8. Ability to read, write, and understand material related to the position.

Physical Demands (with or without accommodations):
  1. Ability to stoop, bend and climb in and out of equipment.
  2. Ability to lift 50 pounds (more on occasion).
  3. Ability to work under stressful situations.
  4. Ability to work with constant exposure to heat, cold, dampness, noise, vibration, and other disagreeable work conditions.
  5. Ability to work in and around moving equipment and/or vehicles.
  6. Subject to be called out in times of emergencies.

  1. Various trucks, (front loader, rear loader, automated side loader, curbside collection truck, pickup truck, etc.)
  2. Skid steer loader
  3. Forklift
  4. Two-way radio
  5. grease guns
  6. Shovel, broom, and other cleaning tools.
