About the Department

To establish a list of eligible candidates that will be used to fill current and future vacancies for the duration of the list, up to one year. The vacancy is a 12-month, full-time (8 hours/day, 6:00 am - 2:30 pm) position located at the District Office in Simi Valley, Ca.

TESTING PROCESS: 
A) Multiple Choice Test = 40% weighting on final score
Tentatively scheduled for: October 29, 2025
B) Structured Interview = 60% weighting on final score
Tentatively scheduled for: The week of November 3, 2025

Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications stated in the job posting by the application deadline in order to move forward in the testing process. Those candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will be invited to the multiple choice test. Those with the highest scores on the multiple choice test will be invited to the structured interview. The testing process is subject to change as needs dictate. Summary
Performs general labor and routine building maintenance work.  Assists Maintenance Specialists in the performance of skilled maintenance work in the various construction and mechanical systems trades, such as, but not limited to, carpentry, electrical, HVAC, irrigation systems, lock systems, painting, plumbing, and other crafts as assigned.
 
Distinguishing Career Features
The Maintenance Technician represents the first level in the Maintenance career path, requiring generalized experience in building maintenance, grounds, or advanced custodial work.  Advancement is possible to Maintenance Specialist with journey-level experience in a designated trades area.  Advancement is possible to a Licensed/Skilled Maintenance Specialist with additional specialized training and experience, and/or licensing in one of the advanced trades.

Position Duties

Incumbents in this classification are capable of assisting and participating with a skilled trades person on any of the following:
  • Performs servicing and maintenance to fixtures.   Makes plumbing adjustments such as unclogging toilets and sinks, tightening toilet seats, adjusting of drinking fountains, cleaning water jets to enhance flows.
  • Paints walls, doors, rooms, buildings, parking lots, and other surfaces. Prepares and finishes surfaces by scraping, using commercial paint removers, fills cracks and holes or sizing plaster walls.
  • Participates in repair and construction of concrete or masonry walkways, retaining walls, and other structures.
  • Constructs, fabricates, assembles, installs, repairs or replaces doors, walls, signs, desks, counters, shelves, shelf units, benches, bleachers, forms, frames, window frames, fences and stairways. 
  • Participates in repair and placement of electrical fixtures such as lamps, ballasts, bulbs and switches.
  • Assists in the movement and setup of temporary buildings and structures.
  • Assembles, adjusts, and repairs furniture.  Moves furniture and stage platforms including those used for special events and activities. 
  • Performs, repairs, and conducts maintenance on projects such as sidewalks and roadways, athletic field equipment, and classroom equipment.
  • Glazes and fits windows. 
  • Refinishes furniture.  Hangs wall coverings.
  • Assists in the installation and maintenance of roofs, baseboards, furniture, cabinets, shelving, bookcases and bulletin boards at a school site.
  • Installs, repairs and maintains floor tile, acoustical tile, linoleum and carpet.
  • Performs routine servicing on air-conditioning and heating systems.  Changes filters.  Greases and oils bearings, motors, and compressors.
  • May participate in setting up venues for district and school activities as directed.
  • May perform maintenance duties of a Maintenance Specialist on an intermittent basis for purposes of training and experience.
  • Performs other duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education and Experience
Requires graduation from high school or equivalent, and 2 years of experience in the general maintenance and remodel of buildings and grounds.

  • Licenses and Certificates
Requires a valid California driver's license.  Requires valid EPA Lead-Safe Certification; employees must fulfill certification requirement prior to completion of the six-month probationary period.

  • Knowledge and Skills
The position requires:  Working knowledge of building, grounds or equipment maintenance, sufficient to independently perform projects and routine maintenance and repairs, and help with assignments requiring advanced skill.  Knowledge of the use, maintenance and minor repair of the various tools and equipment used in building maintenance and repair work.  Knowledge of safe work practices, and the safety orders of the California OSHA related to area of specialty.  Basic knowledge of pertinent Federal, State and local laws, codes and regulations in areas of specialization.  Knowledge of and skill at using a computer and/or common office equipment to access work related information.  Sufficient human relations skill to discuss and understand somewhat technical information and to interact with the normal range of contacts usually found at this level.  

  • Abilities
Requires the ability to:  Perform all of the essential duties of the position under supervision.  Work as a member of a crew and maintain harmonious working relationships.  Perform at the semi-skilled or unskilled level to complete routine maintenance tasks.  Read, understand and interpret work schedules and drawings.  Understand written and oral instructions.  Make straightforward mathematical calculations for distance, angle, quantities and estimates. Work variable schedules to facilitate efficient project completion and special events.  Accurately maintain records and activity logs.  Complete required training within a reasonable time in handling, storage and disposal of hazardous materials, asbestos awareness, OSHA standards, bloodborne pathogens, or other related area of training.

  • Physical Abilities
Requires:  the ability to stand for extended periods of time, walk extensive distances, and manipulate (lift, carry, move) light to heavy weights on a regular basis; the ability to push, pull, and guide materials of heavy weights; balance to work above ground; the ability to climb (e.g. ladders), stoop, kneel, crouch and work in awkward positions; sufficient hand-eye coordination, hand and finger dexterity including ability to grasp, and visual acuity to operate specialized equipment and read technical (including blueprints) and safety information; auditory ability to hear machinery sounds and alarms; near and far visual acuity to read printed materials, moving objects, and observe work-in-progress; speaking ability to carry on ordinary conversations; and the ability to work in extreme temperature conditions.

  • Working Conditions
Work is performed indoors and outdoors in extreme weather conditions where significant safety considerations exist from full-body physical labor, handling of medium to heavy weight materials, and exposure to and handling of chemicals.
