Multi Skill Maintenance Engineer

The Multiskilled Maintenance engineer is responsible for performing a variety of skilled duties to maintain, troubleshoot, and repair manufacturing equipment, machinery, and facility systems. This role ensures optimal operational efficiency, minimizes production downtime, and upholds safety and quality standards. The engineer must be able work independently and collaboratively with production teams and other departments.

Job Title: Multiskilled Maintenance Technician

Reports To: Maintenance Manager.

Key Responsibilities:

Preventative and Predictive Maintenance:

  • Execute total preventative maintenance (TPM) schedules on all manufacturing equipment, including mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.
  • Conduct regular inspections of machinery, equipment, and facility infrastructure to identify potential issues and proactively address wear or damage.
  • Lubricate, clean, and replace parts as necessary to maintain equipment in good working condition.
  • Assist in the development and improvement of TPM schedules and procedures.

Troubleshooting and Repair:

  • Diagnose mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic issues in production lines, equipment, and support systems.
  • Troubleshoot complex machinery problems to identify root causes of breakdowns with minimal downtime.
  • Perform timely repairs and replacements of defective parts and components.
  • Utilize diagnostic tools and equipment to effectively identify and resolve issues.
  • Provide on-call support for urgent issues outside of regular working hours as needed.

Installation and Set-up:

  • Assist in the installation, commissioning, and repositioning of new or existing machinery and equipment.
  • Ensure proper setup and functionality of equipment after installation or repair.

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of all maintenance activities, including inspections, repairs performed, parts used, and downtime incidents using a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  • Prepare maintenance reports by collecting, analysing, and summarizing information and trends.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors and production teams regarding equipment status, potential issues, and completed work.

Safety and Compliance:

  • Strictly adhere to all company safety policies and procedures, including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) protocols.
  • Ensure all maintenance activities are performed safely and that equipment complies with relevant safety standards and regulations.
  • Promote a safety culture and awareness within the work area.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment.

Inventory Management:

  • Monitor maintenance inventory, ordering parts and supplies as needed to ensure availability.
  • Log usage of spare parts.
  • Review common failure modes with rom manager and review spare criticality and stock levels.

Continuous Improvement:

  • Participate in root cause analysis (RCA) following equipment breakdowns to prevent recurring issues.
  • Identify opportunities to improve equipment reliability, efficiency, and maintenance procedures.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives within the maintenance department.

General Duties:

  • lifting equipment as required (with appropriate certification).
  • Assist visiting specialist engineers when necessary.
  • Support and train production workers on routine preventative maintenance tasks.
  • Keep up to date with current and developing manufacturing and engineering trends regarding maintenance.

Working Conditions:

This is a 40-hour per week position. While the standard working hours are scheduled Monday to Friday, you must be prepared to work a shift pattern that may include early mornings, evenings, or nights, depending on operational requirements.

Essential Qualifications & Skills

  • Formal Qualifications: A relevant Level 3 qualification (or equivalent) in a multi-skilled, electrical, or mechanical engineering discipline, such as an NVQ or City & Guilds.
  • Experience: Proven experience working as a maintenance engineer in a fast-paced manufacturing or industrial environment.

Electrical Expertise:

  • Strong electrical fault-finding and diagnostic skills.
  • Proficiency with PLCs, sensors, and control systems.
  • A firm understanding of electrical drawings and schematics.

Mechanical Expertise:

  • Experience with hydraulics, pneumatics, gearboxes, and rotating machinery.
  • A good grasp of mechanical fitting and fabrication.
  • Ability to perform planned preventative maintenance (PPM) to a high standard.

Soft Skills:

  • Excellent problem-solving abilities and a keen eye for detail.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Comfortable using a Computerised Maintenance Management System (CMMS).

Desired, but Not Essential

  • A relevant apprenticeship.
  • Additional certifications, such as the 18th Edition IET Wiring Regulations.
  • Experience in FMCG and industrial manufacturing advantages.
