General Definition of Work

The equipment mechanic, under general supervision, performs skill-based work with minimal decision-making discretion related to performing repair and maintenance of district vehicles and equipment and coordinating preventative maintenance programs for assigned fleet. Employee performs district-level work to carry out Board of Education policies under the direction of the Building Services Equipment Shop Forman.

Place of Work

The normal place of work is on the premises used by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Charlotte- Mecklenburg Schools reserves the right to require you to work at such other place(s) as it may reasonably require from time to time.

 

Essential Functions

  • Adhere to all state, federal, and local laws, policies, and procedures
  • Coordinate a preventative maintenance program for assigned fleet
  • Perform the diagnostic, repair and maintenance of district vehicles and equipment to include but not limited to small engines, agriculture tractors & heavy duty construction equipment, medium & heavy duty truck (class 7-8), light duty vehicles, trailer repairs (enclosed, open & box truck bodies), and refrigerated trucks
  • Fuel, grease and lubricate automobiles, trucks, heavy equipment, off road equipment, agricultural and yard equipment, service batteries and other parts
  • Lubricate systems and oils, greases and attachments used in lubricating automotive and related equipment
  • Diagnose, repair and service automotive, medium and heavy trucks, warehouse, off road, agricultural and yard equipment according to policies and procedures
  • Diagnose and repair gasoline engines, fuel systems, engine electronics, chassis electrical, steering, suspension, hydraulic brake systems, ABS brake systems, drive lines, differentials and axles
  • Diagnose and repair diesel engines, fuel systems air brakes and auxiliary hydraulic systems
  • Change and repair tires and install and service spark plugs, light bulbs, fan belts and other simple mechanical parts
  • Service automotive equipment with fuel and oil; records amounts used; Repair yard, agricultural and off road equipment
  • Weld, fabricate and assemble parts for light equipment, fenders and bodywork; perform heli-arc, mig and acetylene gas welding and brazing
  • Service, maintain, and repair shop equipment
  • Complete daily logs and records related to equipment/vehicle repair/service
  • Perform safety inspections on vehicles and equipment; perform routine repair work and report safety and other priority repair work to supervisor
  • Conduct requisition, issue, pick-up and deliver automotive and equipment parts and supplies
  • Assist in general maintenance and cleanliness of automotive shop area; sweep and wash windows; maintain shop and equipment in a clean and orderly condition
  • Assist in all aspects of inventory control as needed
  • Steam clean and wash motorized equipment
  • Sweep and vacuum car interiors
  • Assist in training new employees to proper procedures and assists other co-workers when necessary to complete the job
  • Respond to all customer concerns and issues
  • Research information online to facilitate repairs
  • Perform related work as assigned or required

Education and Experience

  • High School diploma or GED required
  • Three (3) years of verifiable experience in automotive, truck or heavy equipment repair required
  • Five (5) years of verifiable experience in automotive, truck or heavy equipment repair preferred
  • Vocational training in the mechanics trade or Assoc. Degree in Automotive Applied Sciences with two ASE Certifications (G1, A1 preference) preferred
  • Possess all eight ASE Certifications preferred
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience
