Onset Technologies is seeking a Senior Database Developer with 10+ years of experience in Microsoft Access and cloud-native SQL platforms. This role will lead the migration of legacy Access databases into modern, high-performance SQL environments. The successful candidate will collaborate with program users to analyze existing data structures, design schema transformations, implement ETL pipelines, establish validation checks, and develop cut-over plans to ensure a smooth transition. This position requires both technical expertise and the ability to guide stakeholders through data modernization efforts.

Job Responsibilities / Duties
  • Design, develop, and maintain advanced MS Access databases, including normalized table structures, queries, forms, and reports.
  • Lead migration of legacy Access databases into scalable SQL platforms (Azure SQL, PostgreSQL, AWS RDS, etc.).
  • Architect and execute schema transformations, ETL pipelines, validation, and cut-over strategies.
  • Direct programmers and analysts in implementing database changes; review and correct programs as needed.
  • Conduct performance tuning, query optimization, and system monitoring.
  • Perform logical and physical data modeling, ER modeling, and prototyping to support relational database design.
  • Establish and maintain data dictionaries, enforce standards, and ensure consistency across environments.
  • Develop and maintain disaster recovery, backup, and security procedures.
  • Configure and monitor data integration and batch processing solutions (ADF, SSIS, or equivalent).
  • Support accessibility compliance for database administration tools, user interfaces, and reporting outputs.
  • Provide training, technical documentation, and user support during and after migration.
  • Participate in Agile development methodologies, CI/CD practices, and knowledge transfer sessions.
 
Required Skills & Experience
  • 10+ years proven experience designing, developing, and maintaining advanced MS Access databases (tables, queries, forms, reports).
  • 10+ years expert-level relational database design, normalization, ER modeling, schema refactoring, and SQL schema translation.
  • 10+ years working with Microsoft Access (including VBA for automation).
  • 10+ years experience migrating databases to at least one major cloud SQL service (Azure SQL, PostgreSQL, AWS RDS).
  • 8+ years experience with ETL tools (SSIS, Azure Data Factory, AWS DMS, or equivalent).
  • 8+ years creating migration runbooks, data dictionaries, documentation, and leading training/knowledge-transfer.
  • 8+ years hands-on with RDBMS tools (TOAD, SSMS, SQL Developer).
  • 8+ years configuring data integration solutions (ADF/SSIS), monitoring ingestion, and optimizing query execution plans.
  • 8+ years migrating data from legacy systems into modern target databases.
 
Preferred Skills & Experience
  • 6+ years hands-on with CI/CD, GitHub, JIRA.
  • 6+ years using reporting/visualization tools such as Power BI or Tableau.
  • 6+ years Agile development methodologies.
  • 3+ years prior experience in healthcare or public health.
  • 3+ years experience implementing Agile best practices for one or more State of Texas agencies.
