The City of Greensboro’s Engineering and Inspections Department is seeking a skilled Maintenance Mechanic I – HVAC to join the Building Maintenance Division. This position plays a critical role in ensuring the comfort, safety, and operational reliability of HVAC systems across City facilities.

About the Role

The Maintenance Mechanic I – HVAC is responsible for the installation, repair, service, and maintenance of HVAC equipment in City facilities. Reporting to the HVAC Supervisor, this role requires strong technical skills and the ability to make decisions independently.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Install, repair, and replace HVAC equipment, components, and wiring
  • Test electrical circuits and system components using diagnostic equipment
  • Reassemble and test equipment following repairs to ensure functionality
  • Inspect and verify HVAC system compliance with specifications
  • Troubleshoot malfunctions and consult with facility users to confirm repairs
  • Maintain compliance with safety policies and industry standards
  • Perform physical tasks such as lifting up to 25 lbs, kneeling, standing, bending, and walking

Minimum Qualifications

What You Bring

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma/GED with 1–3 years of hands-on experience in HVAC installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair 
    • “OR” No High School Diploma/GED with 5–7 years of HVAC hands-on experience
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Universal Refrigeration Recovery License


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with building automation systems (Trane Tracer, Johnson Controls)
  • Familiarity with other building trades (i.e. Carpentry, Plumbing, Electrical)
  • Experience with computer software (i.e. iPads and/or general office equipment
  • Prior experience with EAM or other work order systems
