The purpose of this position is to ensure the smooth operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of library technology and online resources to enhance customer service for both staff and patrons. This position collaborates with Library and IT staff, contracted vendors, and directly with patrons to resolve issues efficiently, minimize system downtime, and ensure clear, timely communication. This position provides technical support, documents procedures, delivers training to staff and patrons on library technology and resources, and identifies opportunities for improvement and enhancement.

Position Duties

  • Maintains, updates, and troubleshoots library technology and online resources by collaborating with Library and IT staff, contracted vendors, and patrons; ensures systems function effectively and consistently, and minimizes downtime to enhance customer service.
  • Provides customer service and technical support to staff and patrons by assisting with technology-related needs, answering questions, conducting ad hoc or scheduled training sessions, communicating effectively across work teams and the public through active listening, writing, and speaking.
  • Documents, distributes, and maintains procedures for staff and patrons by creating clear instructions for technology usage, including in-facility laptop checkouts, mobile printing, digital materials and online resource usage, and study room reservations.
  • Maintains professional knowledge by attending continuing education, training, and staff meetings to remain aware of technology developments and trends in public libraries, ensuring library services remain current and effective.
  • Assists library patrons in-person, via phone, and through online communication at public service desks by searching the library catalog, including print and digital resources, to locate information; offers recommendations based on reading and interest levels; provides information from databases and online resources;  and provides referrals to other resources as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education & Experience
Work requires broad knowledge in a general professional or technical field. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

  • Master’s degree in library science (M.L.S. or M.S. in Library Science) with no prior relevant work experience. 
  • Public library experience or experience working in a library technology-related profession preferred.
Other combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Certification and Other Requirements
  • Valid Texas Class C Driver's License.

  • Library technology systems, online resources, digital collections, and software.
  • Troubleshooting techniques for hardware, software, and network issues.
  • Customer service principles and adult/child instructional methods.
  • Documentation standards and procedure development.
  • Trends and developments in library technology and public library services.

Skilled in:
  • Operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting library technology systems.
  • Providing technical support and training to staff and patrons.
  • Communicating effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Documenting procedures and creating instructional materials.
  • Collaborating with IT staff, vendors, and library personnel.
  • Adapting to technology changes and learning new systems quickly.

Physical Demands / Work Environment:

  • Occasional bending, kneeling, reaching, pushing, or pulling to access materials or equipment.
  • Ability to lift up to 20 lbs. occasionally.
  • May require attendance at off-site training or professional events.
