About the Department

The M-NCPPC Archaeology Office is seeking a part-time intermittent Archaeology Collections Specialist. The successful candidate will oversee, maintain, and update the vast archaeological collections in the possession of the Office, including cultural and non-cultural materials, associated records, digital data, and maintaining the collections policy. Attention to detail is necessary for every aspect of the position.

The Archaeology Office is a county-wide unit responsible for preserving, studying, and interpreting the archaeological resources of Prince George’s County within M-NCPPC property. The office exists to inspire stewardship of our cultural resources by providing unique opportunities to experience a tangible connection to our shared past through the science of archaeology.

The successful candidate will be expected to uphold the M-NCPPC’s Natural and Historic Resources Division’s (NHRD) four strategic pillars:

Position Duties

  • Archaeology collections responsibilities include maintaining proper curation standards for archaeological collections, database maintenance for tracking cultural and non-cultural materials (i.e. accessioning/deaccessioning collections, incoming/outgoing loans, tracking the Department’s offsite archaeological collections), and interpreting collections.

  • Lab responsibilities include routine maintenance of the archaeology lab including supervising proper processing, preventative conservation, housing of materials, and lab personnel.

  • Training responsibilities include teaching archaeology collections standards to staff, volunteers, and interns (i.e. curation methods, climate control, security, pest management).

  • Public outreach and education responsibilities include collaborating with internal/external museums, supervising the monitoring of archaeological objects on internal long/short-term loan, creating collections-based programming, developing publicly accessible collections, and lab volunteer coordination.

  • Providing support for ongoing Archaeology Office initiatives, including virtual and in-person programming, fieldwork, and administrative help.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Applicants must have a Master’s degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, or a related field and have a keen interest in local history, collections management, and community archaeology; or a Bachelor’s degree and at least two years of relevant professional experience.

  • Candidates must have excellent communication skills, the ability to work with a diverse public, and be comfortable and effective working independently.

  • Experience with archaeological collections and curation standards; familiarity with material culture of the Middle Atlantic.

  • Experience with database management is a plus, but familiarity with the Microsoft Office suite is vital.

  • Candidates must be able to work a flexible schedule including weekends for occasional off-site programs.

  • Applicants must have a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and able to lift 40lbs of equipment.
