Position Summary: Provides technical support to registered optometrists who provides optometry services to all registered patients that are in need of this service. The incumbent must be resourceful, able to understand and follow complex directions, and maintain complete, accurate records over extended periods of time.
Position responsibilities:
- Performs standard procedure such as: receiving patient, positioning patient, explaining method of procedure to be done, set up and adjust accessory equipment, elicit/record patients’ health history.
- Assists optometrist during minor surgical procedures.
- Will be trained to perform ocular photography, coherence tomography, corneal pachymetry, and sphygmomanometer.
- Keeps inventory, supplies, drug expirations, and ordering up to date.
- Provides basic optometric phone triage in consultation with the optometrist.
- Will be trained to type optometrist’s exam notes into the Retinal Camera, OCT (Ocular Coherence Tomographer), and the EHR (Electronic Health Record).
- Transfers images from electronic instruments across the computer network for assimilation into the EHR.
- Administers appropriate pharmaceutical agents into the patient’s eyes under direction of the optometrist.
- Office work and clerical duties.
- Recognizes and evaluates emergency situations when an optometrist is not present.
- From optometrist’s written prescription, orders eye glasses from optical manufacturers. Upon receipt of eye glasses from the manufacturer, dispenses eye glasses to patients. Verifies eye glass prescription through the use of a lensometer, lens gauges and other instrumentation. Performs frame measurements necessary to assure cosmetically, physically and optically optimum eye glass performance. Performs optical bench work such as repairing damaged eye glass frames and refurbishing frames using the appropriate equipment.

Essential skills and experience:
- Great computer, typing, and email skills.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Punctual.
- Knowledge of social-psychological factors to deal with patients in a diplomatic and tactful manner.
Valued but not required skills and experience:
- Certifications in medical or optical industries.
- Knowledge of anatomy and physiology including the structure of the eye. Knowledge of common medical diseases and ocular complications.
- Knowledge of eye conditions such as myopia, hyperopia, cataracts, glaucoma, etc.
- Knowledge of ophthalmic and medical instrumentation and equipment such as the lensometer, visual field analyzer, tonometer, automatic refractor, and skill to operate camera for photographing the eye
- Knowledge of eye glass frame fitting, adjustments, lens materials and the characteristics in order to select the correct size and materials best suited for optimum visual performance for the patient. Also knowledge of optometric procedures, methods and techniques.
- Knowledge of proper tools and advance repair techniques to repair and modify eye glasses in the most efficient and permanent manner.

Work Environment: There is common exposure to contagious and infectious diseases. The work may include a certain amount of exposure to hostile and emotionally disturbed patients, families and visitors.
