POSITION SUMMARY 

The Business Intelligence (BI) Specialist is responsible for transforming raw data into actionable insights through the development and management of intuitive dashboards and performance tracking. This role plays a critical part in supporting the organization’s data-driven decision-making processes by ensuring the accuracy and integrity of data and presenting it in a meaningful way to stakeholders across various departments. The successful candidate will collaborate with cross-functional teams to define, monitor, and report performance indicators that align with business objectives. Additionally, the BI specialist will be instrumental in identifying trends and providing data-backed recommendations to drive operational and strategic initiatives.

CSS is a Catholic human and social services agency and behavioral health care provider that welcomes people of all faiths through its programs and employment. We provide help for our Alaskan neighbors through a variety of supportive service programs, including emergency shelter, food stability, housing, case management, and refugee assistance. ABOUT OUR PROGRAM/DEPARTMENT

The CSS Data Team provides technical and administrative support and expertise for client-focused CSS programs. While Data Team members will not work directly with CSS clients, the team works closely with those providing direct care to the most vulnerable members of our community. The CSS Data Team seeks to make the administrative burden of operating programs lighter for program staff through building supportive relationships and technical expertise. Team members support a specific portfolio of CSS programs. Workloads include a mix of data entry, report development and presentation, training of direct care staff, and trouble shooting. 

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES

Teamwork: Essential for collaboration with cross-functional teams, such as working with stakeholders to understand data requirements or presenting findings to non-technical colleagues. 

Software and Systems: Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel, is critical for data manipulation and reporting. Proficiency in data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI, Looker) along with a understanding of SQL for querying databases and managing data.

Research: The ability to interpret regulations, code, and law is valuable, particularly if the role requires ensuring compliance with data standards or industry regulations.

Critical Thinking: Analyzing facts, drawing insights, and applying those insights to guide problem-solving, especially when it comes to interpreting data trends or troubleshooting issues with data visualizations.

Self-sufficiency: Ability to work independently and self-guide day to day activities. Adept at understanding when to involve others and ask questions.

Decision Making: Approach problems and decisions methodically and objectively. Uses sound judgement when making decisions and understanding the impacts to themselves, their team and the organization. Makes timely decisions.

 RESPONSIBILITIES

Dashboard Development & Maintenance:

  • Design, develop, and maintain interactive dashboards using tools such as Tableau, Power BI, or equivalent.
  • Translate business requirements into user-friendly and intuitive dashboards that visualize key metrics and trends.
  • Regularly update and optimize existing dashboards to improve functionality and performance.

Performance Metric Management:

  • Identify, define, and track data useful to support performance indicators to measure business success.
  • Collaborate with business stakeholders to establish metrics that align with business objectives.
  • Analyze performance data and provide actionable insights to support decision-making.

Data Collection & Analysis:

  • Collect, clean, and structure data from multiple sources for analysis.
  • Conduct exploratory data analysis to uncover trends, patterns, and insights.
  • Provide regular and ad-hoc reports to leadership, highlighting key trends and opportunities.

Leadership Reporting:

  • Provide the leadership with timely and accurate reporting on specific data as requested.
  • Ensure that data shared with the leadership is clear, concise, and actionable to support strategic decisions.

Stakeholder Collaboration:

  • Work closely with cross-functional teams (e.g., marketing, finance, operations) to gather data and understand reporting needs.
  • Present data findings and insights to non-technical stakeholders in a clear and concise manner.
  • Provide training and support to users to ensure they understand how to interpret and use dashboards effectively

Data Integrity & Quality Control:

  • Ensure the accuracy and integrity of data by regularly performing data audits and checks.
  • Identify and address data inconsistencies and errors in a timely manner.

Automation & Process Improvement:

  • Identify opportunities to automate data collection, reporting, and analysis processes.
  • Continuously seek ways to improve data visualization and reporting capabilities.

Confidentiality and Ethics:

  • Handle confidential information with the highest level of integrity and discretion.
  • Adhere to company policies, procedures, and ethical standards in all payroll activities.

Other:

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education Requirement: Bachelor’s degree in data science, statistics, business analytics, information systems, or a related field. Four (4) years of experience may be substituted for the required education.

Minimum Experience Requirement: Three (3) years working in data management or a data-related field. Experience with data manipulation, collection, analysis, data visualization using BI software, and/or computer programming preferred.

A relevant combination of education and experience may be considered.

WORK ENVIRONMENT 

Work is performed in a standard indoor office environment. Occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds. Frequently sitting or standing at a desk for several hours at a time. 

Travel out of Alaska is rare. Occasional travel within Anchorage is required. This position may be required to visit other program locations.
