Overview:

The IRI Accounting Specialist provides a high-level of personalized customer service to self-employed claimants, and is responsible for processing and calculating the complex Income Replacement Indemnity (IRI) related entitlement calculations independently.

 

The role also provides guidance regarding financial information requirements, calculations, payment processing, and legislative guidelines to the stakeholders including the Case Management team and Legal team and Management within the Injury Claims Directorate. The Specialist participates in internal and external communications, performs financial reviews and forensic audits, and provides input and information regarding claims coverage and other investigations. 

Responsibilities:
  • Attend initial meetings with self-employed claimants, Case Managers, and/or other external third parties to gather information, investigate entitlement to IRI, and explain IRI benefits.
  • Follow through this Income Replacement Indemnity process from calculations, decision, review and improvement
  • Support the Supervisor, IRI to develop a training plan, assess the training needs for IRI Calculators and new IRI Accounting Specialists.
  • Review, verify, and reconcile income and financial data against claimant statements and type of employment to determine IRI calculations ensuring that the claimant is indemnified as accurately as possible within the Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) legislation.
  • Classify claimant or deceased and determines appropriate indemnity entitlements in compliance with legislative guidelines, etc. Where unique scenarios arise, makes independent decisions regarding entitlement calculations.
  • Determine self-employed IRI entitlements during claimants’ recovery, including Income Tax review, monthly allocations, and percentage of duties. Reconciles calculations and adjusts recurring payment schedules, as required.
  • Responsible for maintaining the annual update of Tax table based on the knowledge of the applicable Tax Act.
  • Provide job classification and gross yearly employment income (GYEI) and functional ability determinations to Case Managers. Provides alternatives and recommendations as appropriate.
  • Respond to escalated customer concerns.
  • Review, provides feedback, and approve calculations and reconciliations prepared by the IRI Calculator and other IRI Accounting Specialists.
  • Act as a technical resource within the IRI Unit and for special project assignments and process improvement initiatives.
  • Support the implementation of new policies and procedures and corporate strategic initiatives.
Qualifications:

Education:

  • Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation.

Experience:

  • Five years practical experience applying the Income Tax Act of Canada and accounting principles and practices, and performing financial reporting and auditing, including one year experience in the IRI Unit.
  • Customer service, leadership and/or insurance claims is an asset.

Technical Knowledge and Skills:

  • Strong knowledge of related legislation and regulations.
  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles and practices.
  • Analyze and interpret complex data and perform calculations.
  • Work with minimal direction and exercise initiative.
  • Advanced oral and written communication skills to clearly convey complex information in a concise and straightforward manner.
  • Deal effectively with confrontation and stressful situations.
  • Provide excellent customer service while maintaining a professional balance between customer/claimant and organization needs.
  • Lead and motivate others through mentoring and coaching activities and by engaging others in decision-making.
  • Working knowledge of CARS and BI3.
  • Advanced knowledge of applicable office software including Word and Excel and preparing spreadsheets.
  • Knowledge of the National Occupation Classification is an asset.
