The Environmental Data & Governance Initiative (EDGI) is a research collaborative with a mission to advance the environmental right to know. We are a horizontally organized community of caring and committed members. Our team is made up of mostly volunteers, from multiple academic institutions and non-profit organizations. EDGI focuses on issues of environmental justice, data justice, information accessibility, and corporate and government accountability.  

The Government Information and Community Engagement Specialist will be responsible for expanding EDGI’s Public Comments Initiative and Community-Led FOIA project with EDGI team members. The role will support individuals and organizations find and leverage government information in effective advocacy. The Specialist will collaboratively help build EDGI’s advocacy strategy and enhance EDGI’s community-engaged practices. 

Working in and with EDGI’s Web Governance Team, the Specialist will expand the Public Comments Initiative to develop thorough, accessible informational resources about proposed rules and rules at risk of deregulation. The role includes developing and leading workshops to support individuals and organizations in writing public comments. In tandem, working in and with the Community-Led FOIA Team, the Specialist will expand resources about effective use of public records rules in environmental advocacy, including leading workshops with partner organizations. Additionally, the Specialist will expand EDGI’s public records capacities through developing, processing, and liaising with public records requests. 

EDGI expects all staff to support our Code of Conduct and our mission, vision, and values, which include justice; environmental and human health; intersectionality; anti-facism, anti-racism, and anti-oppression; accessibility; participatory knowledge-making; and responsivity and proactivity. There will be an employee review approximately three months after the start date to ensure mutual satisfaction


Key Responsibilities

  • Identify, catalog, and collate information related to proposed rules and existing rules that may be repealed 
  • Coordinate and lead volunteers to advance EDGI’s Public Comments Initiative 
  • Develop and lead workshops about effectively writing and leveraging public records requests and public comments 
  • Write, process, and liaise with government bodies and communities about public records requests (FOIA and public comments knowledge required)
  • Coordinate internal EDGI learning sessions about relevant issues

Skills and Qualifications

  • Demonstrated environmental policy experience 
  • Demonstrated community engagement experience  
  • Experience working with government information 
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate well with others
  • Excellent written and oral communication 

About EDGI

EDGI is a distributed collaboration operating under the fiscal sponsorship of the non-profit Multiplier, with volunteer members across North America. EDGI works to:

  1. Investigate and analyze the inner workings of federal environmental policy through agency staff interviews, as well as data and documentary collection and analysis;
  2. Monitor and analyze changes to web-based information about the climate and environment provided by the federal government;
  3. Develop new ways of making federal environmental data more accessible to the public;
  4. Imagine, conceptualize, and move toward environmental data justice;
  5. Advocate for improved federal data and information governance policies and practices; 
  6. Prototype new organizational structures and practices for distributed, collective, effective work rooted in justice.
