Position: Museum Staff
Department: Arts & Cultural Development
Employment Status: Permanent- NB Contract - Non-Exempt
Schedule: Wednesday - Friday: 11:00AM - 5:00PM
Compensation: $15.00/hour
Position Introduction
Works under the supervision of the Director of Arts & Cultural Development and the Museum Coordinator and is reviewed for compliance with established procedures while working and through review after assignment completion and evaluation of the same.
The Museum Staff position is responsible for the general support and work of the Morgantown History Museum (MHM), including helping plan and execute programs, partnerships, and other museum activities. Museum Staff work closely with the Director of Arts and Cultural Development and the Museum Coordinator in developing and implementing programs and daily activities of the Museum and supports the Museum’s exhibitions, tours, research projects, collections management, educational activities, volunteer coordination and community outreach.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES - KNOWLEDGE – SKILLS - ABILITIES
- Primary responsibilities include the day-to-day operation of the museum, customer/visitor relations, collections management, exhibit cleaning, installation, and storage, accession and deaccession of artifacts, and other museum related assignments.
- Museum Staff helps in overseeing the maintenance of the facility and to recommend actions to optimize the building’s care and use.
- Museum Staff must interact effectively with many constituencies: staff, students, participants, funders, school and civic organizations, and local and state units of government.
- Staff is encouraged to be active in monitoring public history trends and recommending appropriate programming to keep pace with a changing environment.
- Assists the Director and Museum Coordinator to develop programs and services and helps implement initiatives to fulfill the mission of the Museum and increase local and statewide awareness and usage of MHM.
- Under the direction of the Director of Arts and Cultural Development and Museum Coordinator, coordinate the day-to-day operations of the museum and implement programs and services for the Museum’s exhibitions, tours, research projects, collections management, educational activities, volunteer coordination and community outreach.
- Develops and makes recommendations on programming, events, partnerships, and other opportunities for the Morgantown History Museum.
- Serves as a liaison to visitors, volunteers, and other staff.
- Assist in managing and maintaining the property and facilities of the Museum, as well as the collections held in public trust in coordination with the DACD Director, Museum Coordinator, Public Works, and other City Staff.
- Computers and office equipment.
- Interfacing with the public and customer service.
- Interest in history and cultural programs.
- Must have the ability to work harmoniously and cooperatively with fellow employees and the public.
- Must be willing to work weekends and evenings.
WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Good working conditions with limited exposure to physically demanding, unpleasant, strenuous, and/or hazardous elements.
- Position requires the ability to lift 20 lbs.

CONTACT & SUPERVISION
- Employee encounters extensive contact with the general public on a daily basis, as well as various community groups, city departments, elected officials, board members, stakeholders, and volunteers.
- Reports directly to the Director of Arts & Cultural Development.

Requirements
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED) with some background, interest or experience in Museum Studies, History, Business, Arts and Culture, or a closely related field.
Certification/License:
- Must have a valid West Virginia driver’s license.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s Degree in History, Museum Studies, History, Business, Arts and Culture, or a closely related field or a combination of education and experience, with at least three (3) years of experience in museum or arts, community activities, or program administration and operation.
- Capable of planning, developing, promoting, and operating comprehensive year-round operations of a museum and programs and services related to the history of Morgantown.
- Experience and skills in marketing, communication, and social media, for the promotion and publicity of museums activities and arts and cultural programs, events, and services.
