JOB SUMMARY

The Fire Program Coordinator is responsible for the maintenance, support, and orderliness of structural fire training through the Fire Science Program at Klamath Community College. The Coordinator is responsible for the equipment, supplies, and communication with instructors, students, and other KCC departments. 

Position Duties

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Forecast equipment replacement based on certification and industry standards.
  • Keeps ledger of equipment service.
  • Work with program lead to properly and securely inventory, store, and maintain PPE, structural fire apparatuses and equipment, including laundry and air bottles, in a training ready state. 
  • Work with lead instructor to assure that appropriate apparatus, equipment and training aids are available on site for training.
  • Communicate the program lead’s need to other departments within the College.
  • Supervise student workers.
  • Coordinator the use of classrooms, parking lots, and other spaces.
  • Assist in Graduation Ceremony days.
  • Assist in issuing properly fitted PPE and equipment.
  • Insure appropriate number and certification of instructors for classroom activities.
  • Coordinate with agency partners to use specialized facilities (i.e. live fire) and equipment (e.g. HazMat) for training per established agreement. 
  • Recommend acquisitions of needed supplies, equipment, and training aids to program lead.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

  • This is a part time (hourly) position that requires flexibility in work hours to meet the demands of variable class scheduling.  The incumbent can expect to work on average approximately 5-10 hours, but not more than 20 hours, per week commensurate with each term’s course demands. 
  • While performing the duties of this position, the employee is primarily working indoors in a lab/classroom environment or doing outdoor lab exercises on/around fire apparatus in off-campus environments. The noise level in the work environment is typical to most lab/classroom environments with some prolonged exposure to loud fire apparatus and equipment. Other background noises and lighting conditions vary. 
  • The incumbent must be able to sit and/or stand for long periods of time, as well as to move about the campus.

Minimum Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES NEEDED TO PERFORM THIS ROLE

  • Knowledge of Fire Science subject matter being taught for in-field and classroom/lab setting. Computer applications for communication and learning, including, but not limited to, word processing, the Internet, multi-media presentations, spreadsheets and database management; curriculum development.
  • Excellent writing and oral communication skills.
  • Must possess excellent leadership, customer service, communication, organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to function efficiently in a stressful work environment.
  • Must be able to hear and speak well enough to communicate with students, faculty, and staff face to face and via the telephone.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Recommended:  A minimum of an Associate’s degree in Fire Science or an equivalent combination of education and experience, though a Bachelor’s is preferred. At least 2 years of experience working in the Fire Science field. An Oregon recognized structure fire instructor certification. Prior teaching or training experience is preferred.
