Role: The Assistant Vice President (AVP), Mortgage Underwriting is a strategic leader responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the Mortgage Underwriting Business Unit. This role ensures consistent delivery of high-quality service across multiple credit union partners supported by the CUSO, while maintaining a strong focus on risk mitigation and regulatory compliance. The AVP brings deep expertise in all mortgage loan types, including conventional loans backed by GSEs (Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac), jumbo loans, government programs (FHA, VA, USDA), portfolio, HELOCs, and construction-to-permanent financing. They ensure underwriting decisions align with investor guidelines, internal policies, and sound credit standards to protect the safety and soundness of the credit union partners. The AVP monitors and adapts to evolving regulatory requirements, including those from CFPB, HMDA, TRID, and fair lending laws, and ensures the underwriting team remains compliant and well-trained. This role also drives operational excellence by managing workflows, optimizing processes, and leveraging data to support performance and decision-making. As a key liaison between underwriting, processing, secondary marketing, and credit union stakeholders, the AVP communicates clearly and effectively, fostering collaboration and a member-centric experience. The ideal candidate possesses extensive mortgage underwriting experience, strong leadership capabilities, and a commitment to maintaining high standards of quality, compliance, and service.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

  • Leads and manages the Mortgage Underwriting team, ensuring daily operations run efficiently while maintaining high service standards across multiple credit union partners supported by the CUSO. Develops and maintains a high-performing team by overseeing recruitment, onboarding, and retention of qualified staff, while providing ongoing coaching, performance management, and professional development opportunities. Provides training, support, and mentorship to underwriting staff to ensure consistent application of credit policies, foster professional growth, and maintain a culture of excellence and accountability.
  • Ensures procedures are in place and followed to maintain compliance of regulations, including RESPA, Reg Z, ECOA, Reg B, HMDA, NFIP, BSA, Fair Lending Act, Fair Housing Act and Dodd-Frank. Ensures staff is aware of and follows government and secondary market guidelines, such as Fannie Mae, FHA, VA, USDA, Investor, client portfolio and other lender specific guidelines. Monitors regulatory compliance by staying current with federal and state and implementing necessary updates to policies, procedures, and training programs. Ensures adherence to all credit underwriting standards and investor guidelines across all loan types, including GSE, Jumbo, Government, HELOCs and Construction-to-Perm, to mitigate risk and uphold the safety and soundness of the mortgage portfolio.
  • Manages pipeline reports, ensuring adherence to the Mortgage Process Flow. Manages QC reports to ensure compliance. Ensures quality control of files and accuracy of data in the system used for uploading to the servicer.
  • Address and resolve complex underwriting issues, collaborating with internal teams and credit union partners to ensure timely and accurate decisions that support member experience and operational goals.
  • Performs other job-related duties or projects as required.

Experience: Seven or more years of mortgage lending experience required.  Five years of people management/leadership experience in Underwriting position, required.   Previous underwriting experience required.  Must be FHA DE Certified. Must be VA SAR Certified

Education: Bachelor's degree in business administration or finance, or equivalent combination of education, training, experience, or military experience.
