About the Department

The Laboratory Pretreatment Specialist is a non-exempt position that reports to the WRF Laboratory Supervisor and will assist the Pretreatment Manager. The Laboratory Pretreatment Specialist will be responsible for performing a variety of laboratory and field analyses, will collect wastewater, river water, and industrial samples, and will also assist with imputing data into a computer.

This job description is an overview and is intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed. It is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all the functions and tasks required of the position.

Position Duties

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Conducts chemical, physical, bacteriological tests on water, sewage, sludge and industrial waste samples
  • Conducts monitoring and sampling of high strength industries or any industry regulated under the Pretreatment program
  • Sets up laboratory equipment and instruments required for testing and/or quality assurance
  • Cleans equipment after use
  • Analyzes samples and determines purity and other characteristics of chemical solutions used in testing
  • Assists in determination and investigation of potential sources of various substances found in wastewater
  • Records test data and prepares reports
  • Installs and removes wastewater composite and discrete samples in sanitary sewer manholes at various locations
  • Performs field tests for pH, sulfides, DO, temperature and chlorine
  • Will provide information to industries, commercial businesses and citizens on federal, state and local pretreatment regulations and compliance issues
  • May perform sampling and analysis after normal business hours

IMPORTANT
FUNCTIONS: 
  • May perform the duties of similar classifications of an equal or lower pay grade
  • May take soil samples from biosolids application sites
  • May perform Grease and Oil Management Program inspections

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The physical standards an employee must meet in order to perform the essential job duties with or without a reasonable accommodation include, but are not limited to:
  • Heavy lifting of up to 50 pounds is an essential function of this position
  • Walking and standing for extended time periods and climbing stairs and ladders are essential functions of this position
  • Requires good hearing to communicate with the public, staff members, hear audible alarms and listen to equipment to detect possible problems
  • The incumbent must be able to perform a full range of body movements and manual dexterity to set up and operate laboratory equipment; maintain and adjust laboratory equipment and instruments; transfer solids and liquids quantitatively and without spillage or contamination; to inspect industrial and commercial facilities; remove and replace manhole covers; install and extract automatic samplers; perform work on a computer; drive City vehicles; and perform other essential functions

Minimum Qualifications

This position requires: 

  • Ability to conduct chemical, physical and bacteriological tests on water, sewage, sludges and industrial wastes in a timely manner according to standardized testing procedures
  • Ability to analyze results obtained from these tests
  • Detailed knowledge of laboratory testing equipment
  • Knowledge of and ability to work with spreadsheets, word processing and databases such as Microsoft Word, Excel and Access
  • Ability to use a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) including sample and data entry
  • Ability to write reports and assemble data
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Must have the physical ability to climb, remove manhole covers, and enter confined spaces
  • Ability to complete forms and keep accurate records
  • Ability to work successfully with and provide good customer service to supervisors, other City employees, the public and other agencies and organizations
  • Ability to perform all the job duties in a safe manner

Other Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in chemistry, biology, environmental science, or a related field
  • A minimum of six (6) months verifiable experience operating a computer using Microsoft Office products
  • A valid driver’s license at the time of application, and a valid Colorado driver’s license within 30 days of employment
    • License restrictions that may hinder your ability to drive on City business, such as an interlock, will be cause for disqualification 
    • During the course of employment, a valid license must be maintained, and the employee must notify the City immediately upon changes to the status of their license

In addition to meeting the minimum qualifications at the time of application, within one (1) year of appointment the employee must:

  • Obtain a State of Colorado Wastewater Facility Operator Class "D" Certification
  • Obtain a valid Class 1 Wastewater Collection Operator Certification from the Colorado Water and Wastewater Facility Operator's Certification Board

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

This position may be exposed to noise, moving parts, heights, dangerous chemicals and conditions, disease, extreme weather, and other dangerous conditions. The individual must be willing to work overtime, weekends, holidays and may be called back for emergencies. This employee must be willing and able to understand and comply with all safety procedures, directions, and standards. This position will be required to perform heavy lifting and climbing stairs and ladders.
 
All required licenses and certifications listed above must be maintained throughout the term of employment. Failure to obtain or maintain licenses and certifications may result in demotion or termination.

Due to Federal and State Criminal Justice System access requirements, classifications that access and maintain criminal justice information may also be required, as a condition of employment, to not have been convicted of and/or have pending charges of a felony or misdemeanor crime that would deny or otherwise restrict access to criminal justice information.  This requirement applies to all existing City employees as well as external candidates seeking to fill positions that meet the given criteria.
