Job Description: Fiber Engineering Technician

Reports To: Outside Plant Supervisor

Classification: Full-Time, Exempt

Position Summary

The Fiber Engineering Technician is responsible for supporting the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, testing and repair of the fiber optic network. This role combines hands-on fieldwork with design and quality control expertise. Working closely with network engineering, construction, and operations, this position will support the long-term reliability and efficiency of the fiber network.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Install, splice, and test mainline fiber optic cables for residential, commercial, and industrial clients. This can include aerial, underground, and trench installation.
  • Conduct OTDR, power meter, and light source testing to verify signal integrity and ensure compliance with quality standards.
  • Read and interpret fiber network maps, construction drawings, and splice documentation.
  • Troubleshoot and repair damaged fiber optic cables and restore service efficiently.
  • Perform make-ready tasks such as identifying conflicts, pole transfers, and underground pathway preparation.
  • Maintain detailed splice records, as-built documentation, and test results for network accuracy.
  • Conducting regular maintenance checks to ensure the reliability and performance of the fiber optic network.
  • Support business and enterprise customer installation of services
  • Ensure all work meets safety, quality, and industry standards.
  • Prepare fiber designs that are accurate, cost-effective, and meet engineering standards.
  • Conduct quality assurance inspections during and after construction.
  • Operate bucket trucks with a GVWR less than 26,000 pounds, fusion splicers, OTDRs, and other specialized fiber tools and equipment.
  • Collaborate with network engineering, construction, and field teams to support network builds and maintenance.
  • Respond to fiber outages, perform emergency restorations, and assist with on-call rotation as needed
  • Adhere to company policies, safety protocols, and regulatory requirements at all times.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Operating bucket truck
  • 3 or more years of experience in fiber installation, splicing and testing
  • Knowledge in fiber optic theory, installation standards and testing procedures.

Authority & Accountability

Handles daily technical duties and makes routine decisions with limited impact. Seeks supervisory guidance for unclear policies or major decisions. Works to carry out
the duties and responsibilities of this position in conformity with established policies and procedures. He/she has the responsibility and expectation to make suggestions for efficiency and improvement of operations for their department and the Cooperative. Responsible for assigned equipment and company assets.

Physical Demands & Work Conditions

  • Physical Effort and Dexterity: Work is considered medium effort. Frequent physical activity, including walking, standing, stooping, bending, and frequent lifting up to 30 pounds and 50 pounds occasionally. Requires manual dexterity.
  • Machines, Tools, and Equipment required to be operated: Operates fleet vehicles when driving to the various sites. Work with test equipment, hand tools, computers, and Fiber equipment.
  • Visual Acuity, Hearing, speaking: Requires normal range of vision. Visual color discrimination is beneficial to differentiate between wire and part colors.
  • Environment/Working Conditions: Work is mostly in varied weather conditions; is exposed to the hazards associated with weather conditions and members’ animals. Work is regularly scheduled Monday-Friday, although weekends and after hours may be required. Position requires travel throughout the service area. Occasionally required to travel outside service territory or outside the state to attend training conferences. Will be required to respond to network system outages after hours as required.
