Description

The Counselor provides personal mental health counseling services to Saint Mary’s College students, provides appropriate education to relevant campus community parties, and collaborates with other campus departments to support campus wide mental health support.

The Counselor will provide consultation to students, parents, faculty, staff, and others with appropriate release of information forms executed, and communicate effectively and respectfully and work collaboratively with staff, faculty and students from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds. This position will work with a variety of Saint Mary’s College community members, as well as, individuals in the surrounding South Bend community and beyond, and provide emergency intervention as needed.

The Counselor will communicate with the Director of the Health and Counseling Center regarding students experiencing situations or symptoms that may rise to a level of community concern, and participate in professional development activities related to continuing education requirements and to fulfill licensure requirements. This position will maintain files in compliance with institution and Indiana requirements as well as professional ethical standards, and collaborative participation in weekly case staffing and psychiatric case staffing with consulting Physician/NP and other departmental staff.

Minimum Qualifications  

  • Minimum of a Master’s degree in counseling or social work. 
  • 3-5 years counseling experience. 
  • Appropriate state license(s) to provide counseling in the state of Indiana. Function within Indiana state laws and scope of practice related to mental health counseling.
  • Experience in counseling services, specific to adolescent women and/or young adult women in an educational environment. Areas of experience should include working with underrepresented minority students and individuals who associate with the LGBTQ+ community.
  • Ability to ready, interpret and analyze general periodicals, professional journals, governmental regulations and medical reports.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, both orally and in writing, on the telephone and in person.
  • Ability to use and understand electronic note keeping and electronic medical records.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative, team environment.
  • Training or certification in evidenced based trauma intervention.
  • Experience in treatment of eating disorders & body image issues.

Preferred Qualifications    

  • Possess the ability to work independently.
  • Possess a working knowledge of computer and word processing programs, printers, copiers, and telephone/fax machines.
  • CPR/AED certification (may receive certification through Saint Mary's College).
  • Administer and interpret routine assessment instruments, as appropriate. 
  • Evaluate, plan and implement appropriate level of care for clients.
  • Ability to provide presentations to faculty, staff, students and others as requested.
  • Define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw logical conclusions.
  • Knowledge of second language preferred.

Schedule         

40 Hours/ 10 Months/ Monday – Friday
