Job Purpose
The Director of Construction and Maintenance oversees all aspects of field operations across construction and maintenance projects, providing leadership in bid reviews, assembling site indirect teams, and ensuring safe, efficient, and profitable execution of work. This role requires regular engagement with site management teams and client representatives to align on shared goals, resolve issues quickly, and uphold operational excellence, while driving continuous improvement, maintaining safety compliance, and supporting long-term project success.
Responsibilities:- Display a strong commitment to Waiward’s incident-free vision, values, and culture.
- Direct the day-to-day operations of all Waiward field sites.
- Serve as a key link between site leadership teams and corporate management.
- Support the development and management of field execution plans, project schedules, and contractual agreements; participates in dispute resolution when required.
- Work closely with site leadership teams to monitor daily activities and organize teams for maintenance, sustaining capital, major maintenance, and new construction projects.
- Ensure strict adherence to quality control, safety standards, and contract specifications.
- Manage and provide direction to construction project teams, reviewing deliverables and resolving project-specific challenges.
- Prioritize workload and focus on mission-critical tasks.
- Review customer contracts and specifications to ensure compliance with internal processes and procedures.
- Escalate site and project concerns to corporate only when necessary.
- Engage customers to reaffirm Waiward’s value proposition and explore new opportunities.
- Collaborate with project accounting to ensure effective project controls and reporting.
- Travel regularly to customer sites within the region.
- Work closely with home office leadership to identify opportunities, risks, and actions that support long-term growth.
- Monitor financial performance to ensure projects meet or exceed budgetary commitments.
- Lead by example and champions Waiward’s integrated HSEQ program.
- Support Human Resources initiatives for both office and field operations.
- Provide input and support to construction estimating.
- Serve as a valued member of the Waiward Management Committee.
- Partner with senior managers on strategic growth plans, ensuring objectives are communicated to frontline leaders.
- Work with finance, corporate development, and estimating teams on backlog and revenue forecasting.
- Proactively identify business opportunities and recommend adjustments to strengthen Waiward’s market position and deliver customer value.
- 15+ years of experience in the Alberta Oil & Gas sector, including 5+ years leading construction and/or maintenance teams.
- Journeyperson Ticket is considered a strong asset.
- Proven ability to make objective, effective decisions and delegate tasks across multiple operations.
- Experience working with unionized labour and within collective agreements.
- Proficient in industry-standard software, including Microsoft Office Suite and Primavera.
- Strong collaboration and leadership skills, with sound judgment aligned to corporate values.
- Ability to communicate complex information clearly and appropriately to diverse audiences.
- Skilled in problem identification and resolution, including evaluating solutions against company standards and guidelines.
- Advanced expertise in bidding, purchasing, negotiating, contracting, and budgeting.
- Excellent organizational, presentation, interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Proven ability to manage priorities effectively in a large and dynamic workload.
- CSTS-2020 certification (mandatory prior to site access).
- Must successfully complete pre-access alcohol and drug testing.
- Valid Class 5 driver’s license with a clear and current driver’s abstract
Working Conditions
- This position requires a high level of travel (40–60%) across multiple sites in Western Canada to support site leadership, ensuring key metrics are captured and workforce processes are effectively implemented. Work will regularly take place in and around industrial field environments, including at heights and typical industrial site conditions.
Physical Requirements
- Close visual acuity is required to perform activities such as preparing and analyzing data and figures, reviewing documents, working on a computer for extended periods, and extensive reading.
- The role requires the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time.
- Regular movement throughout active construction areas may also be required, including exposure to typical industrial site conditions and occasional work at heights.
