Under direction, the Park Ranger job class performs semi-skilled grounds, maintenance and construction work in City parks and recreational facilities and limited law enforcement duties, such as patrolling City parks and recreation facilities and enforcing applicable city ordinances, county codes, and state laws relating to use of parks in the City; and performs other specifically related work as required.
EXAMINATION PROCESS: Based upon screening of the City application, résumé, and responses to supplemental questions, applicants whose qualifications best meet the requirements of the position will be invited to the examination process. This process may include, but is not limited to: panel interview, written examination, and/or performance exam, which consist of an evaluation of some of the essential knowledge, skills, abilities, and job related experience listed below. Those candidates who pass the examination process are placed on an eligibility list from which the final selection will be made.
SELECTION PROCESS: As authorized by City policy, applicants being considered for hire in this position are subject to fingerprinting for purposes of investigating criminal history background, as part of the employment screening process. Appointment is subject to successful completion of a pre-employment medical examination (based upon job-related physical standards) by a City-designated physician.
Failure in any one part of the examination or selection processes will disqualify a candidate from further consideration.
Position Duties
The following duties are typical of this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the duties and/or may be required to perform specific additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.
Explains and interprets park rules and other applicable regulations to park patrons
Patrols and secures City Park and recreational facilities
Provides assistance in emergencies, and administers first aid and CPR when necessary
Enforces parking regulations within parks
Issues warnings and citations, when necessary, to enforce applicable city ordinances, county codes and state laws relating to use of city parks
Coordinates with law enforcement agencies when a situation is beyond his/her control and expertise, and works with local authorities in other areas of law enforcement that occur in the parks where assistance is required
Supervises court assigned workers in work projects
Maintains, repairs, and assists in constructing park structures and facilities
Cleans campgrounds, picnic sites, and restrooms
Collects fees, issues permits, and assigns use areas
Protects and cares for lawns, shrubs and trees
Maintains records and prepares reports
Performs related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications
Include any combination of training, education and experience which demonstrates an ability to perform the duties of the position. The typical qualifying entrance background is:
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Possession of certification of successful completion of a 40-hour PC 832 Arrest Training (no firearms) course OR ability to complete the course within 90 days of appointment is required. This course must meet the requirements of Section 832 of the Penal Code, as certified by the California Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST).
LICENSE: Possession of a valid and appropriate California Driver's License. Must possess, or ability to obtain within six (6) months of appointment, valid cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and first aid certifications. Incumbents must maintain certifications in accordance to statutory mandates during course of employment.
KNOWLEDGE OF:
Basic principles and practices associated with general law enforcement
Methods, materials, equipment and tools used in the maintenance and operation of grounds and buildings associated with a park
Basic fee collection and accounting practices.
ABILITY TO:
Read, interpret, and enforce laws and regulations
Maintain records and prepare clear complete and concise reports
Exercise sound judgment
Speak and write effectively
Perform construction, repair and maintenance work
Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with the public and other employees
Follow oral and written instructions
Assist in the development and presentation of nature oriented educational programs
Act with discipline and discretion in stress situations involving visitor and employee safety

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL/PSYCHOLOGICAL DEMANDS:The conditions herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Occasionally sit, crawl, kneel, push/pull, twist at the waist, handle, grip, or grasp, finger, reach above, at, and below shoulder level, extend neck downward, upward, and side to side. Rarely climb stairs, ladders, or scaffolding. Vision: Visual acuity which could be corrected sufficiently to perform the essential functions of the position; average depth perception needed. Hearing: Hearing ability to effectively hear and comprehend oral instructions and communication.
MENTAL/PSYCHOLOGICAL: Work cooperatively and interact appropriately with those contacted in the course of work, including the general public; read/comprehend simple material; utilize simple math skills; utilize simple writing skills; understand, remember and carry out complex job instructions; respond quickly to priorities; deal with the general public; communicate effectively orally; work under pressure; work within deadlines; train and assign other workers.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: Constantly work outdoors, rarely indoors. Frequently drives motorized equipment/vehicles. Occasional exposure to dust, fumes, smoke, gases, odors. Occasionally work around machinery. Occasional exposure to extreme temperatures, to slippery or uneven walking surfaces. Rare exposure to chemicals, excessive noises, to solvents, grease, or oil, flames/ smoke. Rarely work at unprotected heights. Uses a computer. Frequently works alone; occasionally work with others. Work assigned shifts in conditions which may become hazardous. Incumbents will be required to work weekends, holidays, or other irregular hours, wear prescribed uniforms, and conform to departmental personal appearance standards. Incumbents may be required to reside in an assigned park or recreation area.
