About the Department
General Description:
The purpose of this class within the organization is to repair and maintain diesel transit buses and equipment. This class works under close to general supervision according to set procedures, but determines how or when to complete tasks.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.
Position Duties
Essential Functions:
Repairs and maintains buses and paratransit vans.
Orders and stocks parts ensuring purchasing guidelines are met.
Maintains a sufficient level of parts in the department.
Monitors vendors and determines if repairs should be outsourced.
Works an on-call for after hour emergencies; makes emergency road repairs.
Repairs and maintains fare-box and systems.
Ensures buses are ready for daily runs.
Assists maintenance technicians as needed.
Diagnoses bus multiplexing systems.
Conducts shop meetings to ensure procedures are followed.
Detects, diagnoses, and corrects mechanical defects.
Additional Duties:
Responds to emergency calls for buses and paratransit vans.
Oversees shop operations and ensures safety procedures are followed.
Documents repairs and works closely with Transit Operations Bus Maintenance Manager to ensure proper training and tools are available for staff.
Fills in for Transit Operations Bus Maintenance Manager in his absence.
Performs related work as assigned.

Complexity addresses the analysis, initiative, ingenuity, concentration and creativity, required by the job and the presence of any unusual pressures present in the job.
Performs semi-skilled work involving set procedures and rules, but with frequent problems; requires normal attention with short periods of concentration for accurate results or occasional exposure to unusual pressure.

Impact of errors refers to consequences such as damage to equipment and property, loss of data, exposure of the organization to legal liability, and injury or death for individuals.

Physical Demands:
Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.
Performs light to medium work that involves walking or standing virtually all of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or considerable skill, adeptness and speed in the use of the fingers, hands or limbs in tasks involving close tolerances or limits of accuracy.
Equipment Usage:
Equipment usage involves responsibility for materials, machines, tools, equipment, work aids, and products.
Leads or handles machines, specialized tools, equipment or work aids involving moderate latitude for judgment regarding attainment of a standard or in selecting appropriate items.
Unavoidable Hazards:
Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.
Bright/dim light; dusts and pollen extreme heat and/or cold; wet or humid conditions; extreme noise levels, animals/wildlife vibration; fumes and/or noxious odors traffic; moving machinery electrical shock; heights toxic/caustic chemicals; explosives and violence.

Safety of others refers to the level of responsibility for the safety of others, either inherent in the job or to ensure the safety of the general public.
Requires considerable responsibility for the safety and health of others and/or continuous enforcement of the laws and standards of public health and safety.
Minimum Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent.
Requires two years' experience or more of progressively responsible experience in repairing diesel heavy powered-driven equipment to include multiplexing and electrical; considerable knowledge and experience in repairing diesel or heavy powered-driven transit buses.
An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the position.
Special Certifications and Licenses:
Valid Virginia Driver's License with passenger endorsement.
