Nurse Extern (ICU) en Lifepoint Health

A Nurse Extern is a recent nursing graduate awaiting Boards, designed to gain additional clinical experience and confidence before licensure. Under the direct supervision of an experienced Registered Nurse, nurse externs serve in a supportive role, assisting with patient care and unit responsibilities. Externs may also have opportunities to attend nursing workshops and conferences, while gaining exposure to specialties such as pediatrics, geriatrics, and acute care.

Essential Functions

• Assist the mentor RN with daily nursing duties.

• Support with procedures (cannot independently administer medications or start IVs).

• Provide or assist with patient personal care such as bathing, oral hygiene, dressing, and changing linens.

• Participate in patient triage, resuscitation, charting, and assessment under RN supervision.

• Perform activities strictly under the direct guidance and approval of the supervising RN.

Non-Essential Functions

• Perform other duties as assigned.

• Attend staff meetings, in-services, and projects.

• Maintain compliance with STRHS policies, procedures, and dress code.

• Present a professional and neat appearance at all times.

Organizational Expectations

• Comply with STRHS Standards of Behavior.

• Adhere to dress code standards.

• PRN externs must also comply with all PRN employee requirements.

Job Requirements
Education:

• Currently enrolled in an accredited nursing program (completion of at least one year required), OR

• Recent graduate awaiting licensure exam (Boards).

Skills:

• Strong critical thinking and judgment skills.

• Ability to work in a fast-paced, stressful environment.

• Ability to take appropriate action with minimal supervision.

Certifications:

• Basic Life Support (BLS) – must be completed by the end of orientation (Week 1).

• Other certifications as required by the assigned department.

Licensure:

• Not required at this time.
