SUMMARY:
Reporting directly to the Controller, the Accounting Director is responsible for developing and maintaining strong accounting principles, practices, and procedures to ensure accurate and timely financial statements. 
 
You will oversee project accounting, payroll, and financial accounting. Direct reports include the Accounting Manager, who is responsible for billing, accounts payable and accounts receivable teams, the Payroll Specialist and the Financial Accountant.  This position works in partnership with various departments and the accounting team on financial statements, variance analysis and many ad hoc projects. As a key leader in Finance and Accounting, you are involved in decision-making and the strategic direction for the department.
 
This is a full-time FLSA-exempt position. It requires at least 40 work hours per week, with the ability to work more if necessary.
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Financial Leadership & Asset Protection 
    • Manages and supports the Accounting Department by assisting in setting department goals, ensuring we have the staffing and resources necessary to meet the strategic objectives of the company, and supporting the Accounting employees’ individual growth.
    • Directs the general ledger financial reporting of the organization, ensuring the historic performance is accurate and timely to enable the leadership team to make decisions using the most accurate financial information available.
    • Reports on the cash flow of the Company to the Controller and assists with treasury management activities.
  • Accounting Operations
    • Financial Management: Oversee financial reporting of construction projects.
    • Accounting Oversight: Manage the accounting team, ensuring accurate and timely bookkeeping, payroll, and compliance with industry regulations and standards.
    • Cost Control: Implement and monitor cost control measures to maximize profitability and manage project costs effectively.
    • Project Accounting: Ensure accurate tracking of project expenses, revenues, and profitability, working closely with project leaders and the Accounting Manager.
    • Maintains a documented system of accounting policies and procedures.
    • Works with the Leadership Team on cost accounting.
  • Financial Analysis
    • Prepares financial statements, analyzes financial reports, and audits financial data.
    • Reports overhead and margin measurement.
    • Develops and reports on variance analysis to the budget.
    • Optimizes accounting processes and increases the accuracy and reliability of financial data through responsible use of technology and attention to detail.
  • Department Administration
    • Works with the Controller in strategic planning and goal setting for the department.
    • Works with outside agencies to complete company financial audits.
    • Leads the Accounting staff reporting to this position, providing guidance, accountability, mentorship, training, holding regular 1:1s, and offering support and guidance on career pathing.
    • Provides guidance to other departments on financial matters.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance function.
  • CPA preferred, but not required.
  • Five years’ experience in construction accounting a plus.
  • Five years’ small team (3-10) Management experience.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word. 
  • Experience in Procore, Sage and Construction ERP software or the ability to learn to navigate and use the software quickly is required.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, technology proficiency, analytical and management skills.
  • Proficiency in relevant accounting standards and requirements, such as GAAP, International Financial Reporting Standards.

The employee is required to traverse uneven terrain and work from ladders, scaffolds, and other structures, as well as work at variable heights. The employee is frequently required to use hands to handle tools, controls, and for fine motor coordination like computer work. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and/or crawl. The employee must also occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. 
 
For Field positions, while performing this job, the employee must frequently inspect the project site and may be exposed to ongoing construction activities, vibrations, noise, and various outside weather conditions (in all seasons). Work environment involves moderate risks which may require safety precautions. The noise level in the work environment may range from quiet to loud.  The proper use of Personnel Protective Equipment (including but not limited to safety boots, hardhat, and protective eyewear) is required on the jobsite.
