What you'll do
The Director of Business Banking is responsible for leading and managing the business banking team, driving strategic growth through the expansion of new and existing relationships and ensuring the delivery of high-quality financial solutions to small and mid-sized business members of the Credit Union. This role oversees relationship management, sales development, credit quality and analysis, portfolio growth, product offerings, and referral relationships while aligning with the Credit Union’s overall mission and profitability goals.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities
- Create a positive work environment supported by Canvas’s core values and HEART Behaviors.
- Provide direction and leadership to the Small Business Relationship Manager(s) and Business Services Officer(s) sales positions that increase market share, profitability, and identifies new business opportunities for existing and new business members.
- Understand and perform credit and risk management for loans to small businesses including SBA Loans/lines of credit, Commercial and Industrial (C&I) loans/lines of credit, and Commercial Real Estate Loans/lines of credit.
- Responsible for all management functions including hiring, training, coaching, conducting monthly one-on-ones, performance and sales management, scheduling, cross-training and succession planning, timekeeping, etc.
- Collaborates with Canvas internal stakeholders to develop, enhance and deploy industry best products, experiences, and relationships for Canvas members.
- Manages a team of 4 to 8 individual contributors.
- Responsible for the implementation and ongoing maintenance of Canvas cash management services.
- Determine new and existing members’ online banking and cash management needs, explain various banking services offered, and processes applications related to cash management, online banking, and merchant services.
- Handle all Cash Management related product offerings and processes, including account analysis, online and mobile banking, merchant set-ups and remote deposit capture.
- Assist in the enhancement and development of Canvas products and services to meet the needs of Business Members.
- Assist members with questions, changes, or concerns regarding loans, deposits, cash management products, and referral relationships.
- Assure compliance with all applicable State and Federal banking regulations, bank policies and procedures including but not limited to the Bank Secrecy Act/Anti-Money Laundering Program and Information Systems Security Policies.
- Grow revenue as directed by senior leadership by generating new business members and expanding existing member relationships.
- Manage the branch referral pipeline, qualify deposit and account inquiries and provide necessary resources to assist with business banking needs.
- Identify and successfully cross-sell opportunities and make appropriate referrals to other business partners.
- Perform file maintenance and/or file audits on business/commercial accounts as needed, including changes of ownership, additional services, modifications, etc.
- Maintain a high level of service, consistency and professionalism by delivering Canvas Core Values to internal, external and prospective members at every touch.
- Research and resolve internal and external member issues in a timely, consistent and professional manner.
- Ensure department policies and procedures remain in line with industry trends, market needs and credit union objectives.
- Exhibit support for the organization’s goals, values, initiatives and cost control.
- Follow all safety and security guidelines to properly safeguard members and organization assets.
- Embrace ongoing education and learn/apply new skills and software applications.
- Maintain up-to-date and accurate filing system.
- Regular attendance and punctuality are essential functions of the job.
- Perform other job duties as assigned.
- Pre-employment background review (components include criminal, employment, address, social security number, motor vehicle record, sex offender, and global sanctions,).
- Must obtain and maintain an active NMLS registration under the S.A.F.E. Act.
Job Qualifications
Knowledge, Skill and Ability:
- Understands the financial needs of small businesses and can map those needs to the products, services, and vendors offered by the Credit Union to deepen and develop new member relationships.
- Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to explain programs, loan terms, features, policies to members and business partners.
- Possess the skills necessary to lead a team of small business relationship managers to achieve key performance metrics while consistently delivering exceptional service and integrity through a consultative sales approach.
- Understands the nuances of small business credit and lending as demonstrated by the ability to self-analyze business and personal financial statements, including business and personal tax returns, profit and loss statements, balance sheets, personal financial statements, and other financial documents.
- Proven success in deepening new and existing member/customer relationships through problem solving, negotiation, prospecting and relationship management.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, all while leading others.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Products.
- Advanced knowledge of Canvas Credit Union's products, services and vendors.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Colorado Drivers license and provide proof of insurance.
- Current Canvas employees must be meeting performance expectations and consistently demonstrating HEART behaviors to be considered.
Education or Formal Training: Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience.
Experience: Seven to ten+ years of business banking sales, business relationship management, people leadership and business/commercial credit-related experience with a preference for individuals who previously held credit authority. Proven leadership and sales track record. Strong analytical, communication, and relationship-building skills.
Working Environment/Physical Activities
High volume, fast-paced, dynamic office environment with some travel. Must be able to attend meetings and events outside of regular business hours. The job routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, printers, copiers, fax machines and filing cabinets. The position requires manual dexterity, the ability to lift files and open filing cabinets. The position requires bending, stooping, or standing as necessary.
