About the Department
Hiring range is negotiable between $42,495 and $55,239 depending on a candidate's qualifications and experience.
The purpose of this position is to perform skilled and semi-skilled maintenance work on a variety of Parks and Recreation facilities' grounds and repair projects. May occasionally operate non-specialized equipment in connection with tasks or projects. May also serve as a crew leader of regular, part-time, and seasonal workers.
This job works under close to general supervision according to set procedures but determines how or when to complete tasks. May also serve as a crew leader of regular, part-time, and seasonal workers.
Position Duties
The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.
- Manages the beautification, safety and maintenance of all the park and recreational areas in the city of Goldsboro.
- Performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks in grounds maintenance and landscape disciplines.
- Loads and unloads stone, gravel, dirt, compost, mulch and other supplies as needed.
- Rakes and loads grass, leaves and brush; mows lawns and cleans grounds.
- Digs and backfills ditches; assists with maintenance of parks and recreational facilities.
- Provides assistance to others as needed by carrying materials, tools and equipment.
- Prepares and maintains park facilities and grounds for events, reservations and day to day use by citizens and guests.
- Performs a variety of other heavy manual work in connection with the maintenance and construction of facilities.
- Serves as a crew leader of regular, part-time, and seasonal workers.
- Maintains the well-being and safety of work crews, and verifies they are following safety guidelines.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Knowledge of the safe use, operation and preventive maintenance of the equipment to which assigned.
- Knowledge of the traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation.
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards and proper safety precautions involved in the operation of assigned equipment. Ability to interpret and apply compliance with OSHA regulations, including PPE.
- Knowledge in turf, shrub and tree care.
- Knowledge in irrigation repair and installation.
- Knowledge of the application of turf products to control weeds and fertilization.
- Skill with equipment mechanical repair and preventative maintenance.
- Skill in problem solving.
- Ability to run landscape crews safely and follow all safety guidelines as directed.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other co-workers, supervisors, and the general public.
- Ability to respond with courtesy to citizens.
- Ability to plan, obtain materials needed, and complete tasks on schedule.
- Ability to work with others in a team atmosphere.
- Ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions.
- Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions.
- Ability to read, write and communicate directions.
- Ability to lead landscape crews in a productive and safe manner while ensuring quality.
Other Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent, supplemented by training in varied skilled trades with considerable related skills in parks maintenance or grounds keeping;
- Five (5) years of experience in landscape maintenance, turf management; and in the operation and maintenance of landscape equipment and other mechanical equipment;
- Or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:
- Possession of a valid North Carolina Driver’s License.
- Ability to obtain NC certified pesticide applicators license within one year of hire date.
- Ability to obtain NC certified pool operator’s certification within one year of hire date or Ability to obtain NC master gardener’s certification within one year of hire date (Placement will determine which certification is required)
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.
- Performs medium work that involves walking, standing, stooping, jumping, lifting, digging, pushing and raising objects and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis.
