About the Department

Under the direction of a Maintenance Supervisor, perform grounds maintenance work at schools; perform routine maintenance and minor repair and adjustments to grounds maintenance equipment, trucks and buses.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

This position is the experienced level class in the Grounds Maintenance Worker series.  Incumbents operate and perform maintenance and minor repair to grounds maintenance equipment and motor vehicles in addition to grounds maintenance duties. The Grounds Maintenance Worker II classification performs more routine grounds maintenance work according to established schedules and work routines.

Position Duties

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

1. Mow lawns and fields using a multi-purpose tractor; operate hand mower, edger, trimmer, blower, string trimmer, rototiller, pick-up truck, skip loader, bobcat, sprayer, and other grounds maintenance tools and equipment
2. Perform routine maintenance and minor repair and adjustments to grounds maintenance equipment, trucks and buses
3. Load and unload vehicle and trailer with equipment used; clean equipment and tools used.
4. Operate sweeper to clean paved areas; rake leaves and lawns; collect trash and perform general grounds cleaning
5. Prepare soil; apply pest and weed control and fertilizing chemicals; plant trees, grass and shrubs; prune trees and shrubs, hoe weeds
6. Assist in the installation, operation, maintenance and repair of irrigation systems
7. Assist in the installation, maintenance and repair of playground equipment
8. Assist other maintenance personnel as needed
9. Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

KNOWLEDGE OF:

Routine maintenance and minor mechanical repair of grounds maintenance equipment, trucks and buses

Methods of shrub, tree and lawn planting and care

Chemicals used in grounds maintenance

Strong understanding of current health, safety, and environmental regulations, including OSHA standards and school district-specific safety protocols.

Integrated pest management

ABILITY TO:

Operate, maintain and repair grounds maintenance equipment

Maintain and repair trucks and buses

Repair irrigation systems

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

High School Diploma, GED or certificate of completion and two years of experience in grounds maintenance work involving some operation and repair of equipment

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Valid California driver's license

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Outdoor environment; lift, carry, push, pull or move up to 100 lbs.; stand, walk, sit, kneel, squat, crawl, stoop, bend, climb; use repetitive twisting/pressure involving wrists/hands; work with arms above shoulder level; repetitive use of hand, arm, shoulder; talk and hear normal conversation; exposed to temperature changes; work in damp or wet areas; frequently have hands in water; close/distance vision and depth perception; may be exposed to airborne particles, strong odors, fumes, chemicals, toxic materials; work around moving vehicles; exposed to minor contagious diseases; have direct contact with students, district staff, site administrators, general public;  drive to different district sites; work independently; work with sharp objects, tools, power tools and equipment (e.g. skip loader, multi-purpose tractor, blower, string trimmer, trim edger) with noise levels up to 92.6 dB; eye and ear protection may be required.
