I&E Technician
Must be able to install, test, calibrate, troubleshoot, overhaul, and repair electrical, control, indicating, and measuring instrument devices to ensure specified operating performance. This includes using hand tools, testing and calibrating instruments, and precision measuring equipment. The technician should be able to read and interpret manuals, wiring/instrumentation schematics, and test specifications. Responsibilities also include troubleshooting electric motors, installing circuit wiring, updating instrumentation and control documentation, and performing routine preventative maintenance to avoid malfunctions. Knowledge of electrical schematics and PLCs is required. Other duties may be assigned.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
- Layout, fabricate, and install tubing and tub trays
- Apply mathematical principles to instrumentation (e.g., ratios, powers of 10, conversions, pressure calculations)
- Read blueprints, schematics, and loop drawings; prepare job reports
- Assemble/disassemble electronic process controls, pneumatic and hydraulic systems
- Calibrate equipment using standard procedures; locate and apply relevant documentation
- Understand and control pH and redox levels in liquids
- Work with Ohm’s Law, Kirchhoff’s Law, diodes, capacitors, and other components
- Understand steam behavior and saturation properties
- Apply chemistry and physics principles relevant to instrumentation (e.g., density, melting/boiling points)
- Troubleshoot electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems using proper test equipment
- Understand instrumentation loops and their component functions
- Familiarity with chemical plant equipment (e.g., distillation columns, heat exchangers, boilers, turbines, compressors)
- Measure pressure, level, flow, temperature, weight, density, heat flux, humidity, and moisture
- Maintain current electrician’s license or ID card per state regulations
- Other duties as assigned
Key Responsibilities
- Installation and Maintenance: Install, maintain, and repair electronic and pneumatic instruments and control systems used in laboratory environment
- Calibration: Calibrate instruments to ensure accuracy and reliability in data gathering and process control.
- Troubleshooting: Diagnose and repair issues with instrumentation and control systems to minimize downtime and maintain operational efficiency.
- Documentation: Prepare and update instrumentation and control documentation, including service reports and maintenance procedures.
- Collaboration: Work closely with engineering personnel to modify systems for improved safety, quality, and efficiency.
- Preventative Maintenance: Perform routine preventative maintenance tasks to avoid potential issues or malfunctions in instruments and systems.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Educational Background: A diploma, degree or certification in engineering, instrumentation technology, or a related field is preferred.
- Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of electrical and electronic principles, process control, and field instrumentation.
- Experience: Proven work experience as an Instrument Technician or in a similar role is highly desirable.
Physical Demands: The role requires regular sitting, handling objects, reaching, standing, walking, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, talking, hearing, and occasionally tasting or smelling. Must be able to lift/move up to 25 lbs. regularly and up to 50 lbs. frequently. Vision requirements include close, distance, peripheral, depth perception, and focus adjustment.
Qualifications:
Education: No minimum requirement
Certifications/Licenses: NCCER and a valid Driver’s License
Experience: Minimum 5 years at Journeyman level
