About the Department
The part-time Wetlands Center Education Technician assists staff with any activities at the Wetlands Center including conducting tours of exhibits and supporting special events. Teaches environmental education programs, including camps. Represent Wetlands Center at outreach events. Assist with animal care, including feeding and cleaning of habitats. This is a year-round, part time position. Position requires an acceptable level of comfort in handling live animals in education programs (i.e. snakes, alligators, and other small animals).
Position Duties
- Teaching children and adults during education programs, including camps and outreach activities. Lead outdoor education activities such as seining, birdwatching, fishing, water testing, etc.
- Feeding/caring for live animals and aquaria containing fresh water/estuarine/marine species.
- Education Technician to provide light computer support.
- Developing curricula for new programs.
- Special event support, such as July Fourth Celebration
Minimum Qualifications
Required:
- High School diploma or GED.
- Actively pursuing, or completed, an education in science, education, biology, or related field from an accredited college or university.
- Valid Texas driver's license with acceptable driving record.
- Enjoy working with children and adults.
- May require weekends, evenings and/or overnight travel.
Preferred:
- One-year related experience in Education, Biology, Nature Centers, or a related field.
- Bilingual in English/Spanish
Other Qualifications
An interest in one or more of the following: birding, fishing, plant identification, wetland ecology, woods ecology. A basic knowledge of nature. Ability to assist in creation of environmental educational programs for all ages. Ability to communicate with the public, especially children, by speaking to groups; and to tolerate hot and humid, and cold and humid weather. Ability to get along appropriately with co-workers and the public. Comfort in handling live animals and using animals in educational presentations.
Attendance is an essential function of this position. The City reserves the right to require an employee in this position to work overtime. This position provides services or performs duties for the benefit of the general public during emergency situations. These may include services or duties different from those performed in the usual course and scope of your job. In the event of an evacuation, the incumbent in this position may be required to remain to perform needed services.
