SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

None.

Limits of Authority:

Able to implement, with little supervision, the standards mandated by Head Start Program Performance Standards and Community Care Licensing per Head Start Program Performance Standards, philosophy and mission.

SUMMARY

The Custodian has overall responsibility for the daily cleaning of a Head Start center.

Assist in achieving the agency’s vision, “For Those We Serve,” by empowering individuals who thrive as healthy, self-sufficient and contributing members of our communities.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Daily Cleaning:

A. Empties, cleans and sanitizes trashcans. Replace liners.

B. Sweeps and mops floors in classrooms, office areas, bathrooms, entryways and kitchens (where applicable).

C. Spot cleans and vacuums all carpets daily.

D. Refills dispensers (soap, paper towels, toilet paper, toilet covers, etc.)

E. Spot cleans walls to remove food, smudge marks, etc.

F. Sweeps walkways.

G. Picks up trash and debris on grounds.

H. Cleans and sanitizes sinks and toilets in both staff and children’s bathrooms daily.

I. Cleans classroom and children’s bathrooms between A.M. and P.M. classes.

Monthly Cleaning:

A. Cleans and dusts windows sills, ledges, counters and other hard surfaces.

B. Removes spider webs.

C. Takes inventory of cleaning supplies and submit order request as needed.

General Maintenance and Yard/Lawn Maintenance:

A. Sweeps cement areas around playground equipment daily.

B. Conducts daily safety inspection/correction of buildings and grounds.

C. Removes weeds in a safe manner from the yard, playground, under the equipment and in the sand area at least once every week and more often as needed.

D. Prunes small trees and shrubbery in the yard and on the playground as needed.

E. Waters lawn/grass/shrubbery and maintains in healthy condition in accordance with local city regulations.

F. Performs minor maintenance of sprinklers, such as replacing heads to keep them in good working order.

Other Duties:

A. Changes filters in heating/air conditioning units (ground units only).

B. Replaces light bulb as needed.

C. Performs emergency cleanups (spills, accidents, etc.)

D. Removes debris from sand walkways, parking lots, etc. (as applicable).

E. Washes all interior and exterior windows, as needed.

F. Maintains storage of equipment and supplies.

G. Sets up facility for meetings, as needed.

H. Locks and secures premises as directed.

I. Submits written reports and documentation as required.

J. Strips, waxes and seals floors as directed (winter, spring breaks and summer).

K. Make minor repairs.

Handles power tools and equipment used in waxing, stripping and yard maintenance.

Attends and participates in conferences, meetings and trainings, as required.

Models professionalism for staff, parents, children, clients, and community members. Promotes a collaborative environment within the service areas, program, and agency.

Adheres to the American With Disabilities Act. (ADA-2010), which prohibits discriminatory actions towards children and/or adults with disabilities. In particular, children with disabilities are enrolled in the classroom as mandated by Federal Law.

Maintains strict compliance with universal precautions in the classroom or when administering first aid.

Maintains confidentiality of records and information on Early Head Start/Head Start staff, children and families.

Travels for agency business using personal vehicle.

Maintains regular attendance and punctuality.

Works evenings and weekends as required.

Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION:

  • High School graduate or GED.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Two (2) years’ custodial/janitorial experience required.
  • One (1) year experience in general maintenance preferred.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Effective presentation, written and verbal communication skills.

Maintain a valid California driver’s license, reliable transportation and adequate auto insurance as required by State law. Proof of insurance will be required.

Obtain a valid AB 1207 Mandated Reporter Certification prior to first day of employment.

Pass and maintain Basic Pest Management in a Child Care Settings annual certification as required by the California Healthy Schools Act (HSA).

Physical examination and TB screening clearance and signed federal criminal record declaration are required within 7 days after employment

Immunized against influenza (flu), pertussis (whooping cough) and measles. The influenza vaccination must be obtained annually during flu season, August 1 through December 1. A person is exempt from the immunization requirements for the following circumstances:

1. The person submits a written statement from a licensed physician declaring that because of the person’s physical condition or medical circumstances, the immunization is not safe.

2. The person submits a written statement from a licensed physician providing that the person has evidence of current immunity to pertussis (whooping cough) and/or measles.

3. The person submits in writing declaration that he or she has declined the influenza (flu) vaccination. This exemption only applies to the influenza (flu) vaccine.

Pass required reference checks and fingerprint clearance under Title 22 regulations: Department of Justice/FBI, Criminal Record Statement Child Abuse Central Index (CACI) and background investigation as needed prior to employment.

Former Early Head Start/Head Start parents preferred.

Employment in Head Start (0 to 5) is contingent upon approval of the County-Wide Policy Council (CWPC).

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
