  1. Operates computer system in all assigned functions including maintenance and troubleshooting. 
  1. Assists in the processing of patient tissue specimens.
  1. Admits patients and accessions specimen data.
  1. Transcribes dictation on specimens and reviews for accuracy.
  1. Prepares specimens for shipment to intra-system sites, reference labs and other institutions; compiles necessary support documentation; makes necessary arrangements for transportation.
  1. Performs secretarial and receptionist services for the Laboratory Department including, but not limited to:  typing, computer operations Scanning, faxing, operation of labeling devices, answering telephones and   properly routing messages, while demonstrating positive customer service.
  1. Maintains harmonious and cooperative relations with fellow employees, medical staff, patients and guests and serves effectively as part of the     Laboratory team in performing professional service to patients.
  1. Maintains work benches, testing areas and other work areas in a clean, sanitary and free of clutter condition for the safety of patients, guests and staff.
  1. Maintains a thorough knowledge of departmental and Hospital policies and procedures as they pertain to the job, including the fire and disaster plans.
  1. Performs other work related duties and activities as assigned or requested.

  • Ability to read, write and communicate in English.
  • Associate's degree in Medical Secretarial Science or related field.
  • Four years of recent (within the last 7 years) experience as a Medical Secretary or 2 years recent (within the last 3 years) experience as a Pathology Secretary.
  • Typing skills of 60 words per minute as demonstrated by a timed test.
  • Transcription skills as demonstrated by successful passage of transcription test.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in Microsoft office suite (i.e. word, excel, outlook, etc).
  • Demonstration of effective interpersonal communication skills.
  • Successful completion of a customer service class within 1 year of taking position.
