Job Description:

We are currently seeking a qualified Logistics Specialist to join our Mining team, based out of Calgary, AB. The Logistics Specialist will be responsible for planning, performing or supervising the performance and operational traffic tasks in support of the project, to ensure cost effective, safe, and timely movement of equipment and material to the jobsite and have the opportunity to work on with an Integrated Program Management Team within the Owners team, supporting a major capital potash program within an EPCM environment.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Develop traffic/logistics policies and procedures.  Enforces compliance with these and other directives by shippers, carriers, freight forwarders and traffic/logistics contractors/consultants.
  • Performs, or directs the performance of, administration and operational traffic/logistics tasks of one or more areas of the above specialization required by the project.
  • Assists in the development of project Traffic/Logistics policies and procedures for the multiple operations to guide shippers, carriers, freight forwarders, Traffic/Logistics contractors/consultants and project personnel in shipping, handling, and receiving project in an economical safe and timely manner as well as to ensure compliance with corporate policies and host country laws and regulations governing the import and/or export and transportation of material.
  • Assigns tasks to and supervises the performance of any additional traffic/logistics personnel assigned to the project.
  • Participates in project strategic planning sessions and prepares a logistics execution plan, procedures, policies and job instructions coincident with overall project execution plan and strategy.
  • Prepares studies and traffic analysis to determine quantities of cargo to be shipped and respective requirements for shipping; research existing tariffs and/or rates; contacts for carriers and shipping conferences capable of providing services who can offer favorable and competitive shipping terms and rates for project materials.
  • Prepares technical data for inclusion in Requests for Transportation Services, proposals or contracts.  Participates in the technical evaluation and in contract negotiations.  Tenders their recommendation to project management, within project authority, the contractors to be selected to perform the transportation services for the project.
  • Prepares project transportation cost estimates for project approval.  Monitors performance against approved budgets.
  • Develops data for project management information system to support transportation forecasting and track the movement of project material from source to destination.
  • Monitors performance of carrier's freight forwarders, traffic/logistic contractors/consultants, and other transportation elements engaged to provide services for projects, to ensure compliance with provisions of contracts, agreements, laws, and regulations.  Facilitates action to correct any deficiencies.
  • Facilitates the resolve of deficiencies of shipped material including unsatisfactory, over short and damaged reports, for accuracy of form and content, recommends to appropriate authorities the determination of responsibility and disposition of claims.
  • Establishes contact and rapport and liaises with national/local/municipal regulatory authorities on all freight movement within the jurisdiction involved.  Attends meetings with regulatory bodies and provides guidance criteria to projects to ensure uninterrupted movement of material to the jobsite.
  • Prequalifies heavy lift and even-dimensional load carriers to ensure compliance with unit configuration requirements/bridge and highway axle loading limitations, to obtain required permits for passage over specified routing.
  • Reviews, reconciles and processes invoices relative to transportation/logistics services for payment through project accounts payable.
  • Executes all other related duties as assigned by supervisor.

 

Qualifications:
  • College or University degree in Supply Chain Management, Logistics or related field is an asset.
  • 10+ years of experience in Traffic/Logistics management and administration within the EPC(M), construction, mining or industrial project industries, or equivalent experience and working knowledge in domestic and international transportation operations and administration, to include Canadian, U.S. and foreign government regulations, domestic and international tariffs, possessing excellent negotiating, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Experience with potash or mining projects is an asset.
  • Experience with project site receipt planning including craneage, rigging and specialized heavy haul or transportation equipment.
