ATTENTION ALL ALASKA RESIDENTS!
The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF), Central Region, is looking for an Engineering Assistant 3 in Anchorage to help us Keep Alaska Moving!

What you will be doing:

In this position, you will work closely with our Construction Project Managers. The primary role will be to support a Project Manager in delivering one or more projects using alternative procurement methods such as design-build, Construction Manager/General Contractor (CM/GC), or similar approaches. The successful applicant may also be responsible for writing and/or reviewing consultant contract documents and coordinating plans and specifications with other local, state, and federal agencies.

This role involves performing essential engineering functions, including plan reviews, bid analysis, field inspections, project documentation, materials testing, contractor pay estimates, and overseeing contractor operations to ensure compliance with plans, standards, and policies. Overtime may routinely be required.

Our organization, mission, and culture:
The DOT&PF's mission is to "Keep Alaska Moving through service and infrastructure," and your role in this position directly supports the most critical aspects of that mission. Alaska's highways and airports are essential resources that meet fundamental transportation needs and are vital to health and safety. They also play a key role in supporting our economy by serving communities across the state, as well as the oil, gas, timber, commercial fishing, tourism, and other industries.

In this role, you will collaborate with multiple functional groups within the department, coordinate with staff from various areas of expertise, and assist with public and agency meetings to ensure the successful construction of capital improvement projects in the Central Region. Through these efforts, you will help deliver the department's mission. This department is mission-focused, fostering an organizational culture that values excellence, integrity, teamwork, and public service.

The benefits of joining our team:

Working in our Construction section offers direct, hands-on experience with construction and engineering practices. This opportunity allows you to expand your engineering knowledge, advance your career, earn overtime, and serve the public's needs.

This position supports professional growth within the Department and includes comprehensive health benefits, such as medical, dental, vision, and life insurance, along with a competitive salary. Additional benefits include compensation for overtime hours, paid holidays, personal leave accrual, participation in two retirement plans, and access to other optional benefits.

The working environment you can expect:
This position is permanently stationed in Anchorage. The successful incumbent will conduct plan reviews, field inspections, measurements, and provide documentation and quality review for federal and state civil construction projects. The role requires working outdoors, often in inclement weather, for shifts of up to 10 hours or more per day and as many as seven days a week, including weekends, holidays, and nights. You will frequently be in environments with heavy equipment, dust, noise, and other hazards, necessitating the use of personal protective equipment. Additionally, this position may require travel to remote sites via small airplane, boat, or motor vehicle. Both short-term and long-term travel may be required throughout the Central Region.

Who we are looking for:
We are looking for an individual with the following desired core competencies that will contribute to their success in this position:

  • Civil Engineering: Knowledge of the concepts, principles, theories, and methods required to plan, design, construct, operate, and maintain facilities such as buildings, transportation systems, water and sanitary systems, and other public works systems.
