About this Role:
Ready to bring your expertise to the front lines of residential lending? We’re looking for a Senior Residential Underwriter to evaluate and underwrite a wide range of mortgage products—including Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, FHA, VA, TPO, Portfolio, and Home Equity loans—while ensuring compliance with secondary market, investor, and GSE guidelines. In this role, you will exercise the highest lending authority within the team, making loan decisions on complex applications that require advanced credit analysis and sound judgment.
You will review applicant information, tax returns, title reports, and valuations—including appraisals—to render timely and accurate loan decisions. With your FHA Direct Endorsement (DE) and VA Staff Appraisal Reviewer (SAR) certifications, you will apply extensive knowledge of residential underwriting to deliver results in a high-volume, fast-paced environment. As a key contributor, you will balance risk management with member needs, ensuring every decision supports both the financial health of the credit union and the member experience.
If you’re passionate about credit analysis, regulatory compliance, and creating seamless lending experiences for members, this is your opportunity to make a meaningful impact and help shape the lending future at Securityplus Federal Credit Union.
Requirements
In this full-time non-exempt role, you’ll be responsible for:
Residential Loan Underwriting
You will underwrite a full range of residential mortgage loans—including conventional, FHA, VA, Fannie Mae (FNMA), Freddie Mac (FHLMC), third-party investor, portfolio, and home equity products. This includes reviewing and analyzing borrower credit, income, asset, and collateral information to ensure compliance with agency, investor, and internal guidelines, as well as all applicable federal and state regulations such as TRID, ATR/QM, ECOA, and HMDA. You will utilize automated underwriting systems, while performing manual underwriting when needed to assess complex borrower profiles in a fast-paced environment.
Decision-Making & Risk Assessment
You will exercise lending authority to approve, decline, or counteroffer loans in line with credit union policy and risk tolerance. In this role, you will analyze complex borrower situations—including self-employed income, layered risk factors, and non-traditional income sources—applying sound judgment to minimize risk while meeting member needs. You will also underwrite home equity loans, including HELOCs and closed-end second mortgages, ensuring loan quality and adherence to policy standards.
Documentation & Compliance
You will review and validate documentation such as tax returns, pay statements, W-2s, appraisals, title reports, and AUS findings to determine loan eligibility and protect the credit union’s interests. As the subject matter expert, you will remain current on agency and investor guideline updates and proactively adjust underwriting practices to maintain compliance. You will also support quality control and post-closing reviews to ensure secondary market salability.
Collaboration & Member Experience
You will work closely with loan officers, processors, closers, and management to resolve conditions, clarify requirements, and ensure efficient loan delivery. By providing clear communication on approvals, denials, or counteroffers, you will support a seamless, member-focused lending experience and act as a trusted partner to sales and operations teams.
Leadership & Team Support
You will serve as a resource for junior underwriters and processors, providing second-level reviews, training, and guidance on complex underwriting scenarios. Through mentorship and knowledge sharing, you will help build team capability, promote consistency, and reinforce a culture of compliance, accountability, and service excellence.
What You’ll Bring to the Table:
Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, accounting, or related field required; Master’s degree or MBA preferred.
Active FHA Direct Endorsement (DE) and VA Staff Appraisal Reviewer (SAR) certifications required.
Minimum of 5–7 years of residential mortgage underwriting experience, including secondary market and portfolio underwriting, with strong expertise in income analysis, collateral review, and secondary market salability.
Experience underwriting home equity loans and second liens strongly preferred.
Proficiency with Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac guidelines, TPO investor overlays, and automated underwriting systems (DU/LP). Skilled in income calculation, including self-employment analysis, and manual underwriting for complex scenarios.
Familiarity with loan origination systems such as Encompass, combined with strong technical skills in documentation review and loan file analysis.
Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills, with proven ability to balance accuracy, compliance, and efficiency. Demonstrated ability to work independently in a high-volume, deadline-driven environment.
Experience working within a credit union, community bank, or other member-focused financial institution preferred.
Prior involvement in mentoring or training junior underwriting staff. Knowledge of portfolio loan products and flexibility in underwriting outside standard agency guidelines.
