As part of the Michael Baker International Mid-Atlantic Region Traffic Engineering Department, the Transportation Project Manager will manage projects and task orders while providing traffic engineering support for offices within the Region. Located in Virginia, the Transportation Project Manager will collaborate with transportation staff to provide transportation engineering analysis and design services to support environmental documents, corridor and multimodal studies, roadway design projects, design-build projects.
The Transportation Project Manager will coordinate projects and tasks, interfacing with other groups, identifying needed resources, and assisting in the assignment of work to the project team. The Transportation Project Manager is expected to be an active participant in the preparation of on-call and project specific proposals, including the review of Request for Proposals, scope development and fee estimate.
Specifically, the Transportation Project Manager responsibilities include:
- Establishing, managing, and monitoring the schedules and budgets of programs, projects, and assignments, delegating work to project staff as necessary.
- Assisting in identifying and managing technical challenges and issues that arise during the project scoping, design, budgeting, scheduling, procurement, bidding, permitting and construction of specific projects.
- Assessing and identifying critical and/or arising needs and associated management issues, advising appropriate staff, recommending solutions, and resolving complex problems.
- Reviewing and evaluating traffic signal designs, pavement marking and signing plans and providing recommendations for improvements complying with federal and VDOT policies and standards.
- Reviewing and evaluating traffic analysis documents, verifying accuracy of analysis completed, report clarity, compliance with agreed scope of services, and compliance with federal and VDOT policies and standards.
- Assisting in the development of traffic signal and signal communication design plans, pavement marking and signing plans in support of roadway design projects and design-build projects.
- Assisting in the development of traffic analysis documents, including project level traffic forecasts, capacity analyses and crash analyses, which may entail; organization of data collection, field investigations, macroscopic analysis, calculations, preparation of report tables and figures and report writing.
- Coordinating with Environmental group, Roadway Design group and Structures group regarding geometric improvements when developing feasible project alternatives.
- Assisting as needed in the technical review of drawings, construction documents, and related details for conformity with contract requirements, codes and standards, and costs and schedule compliance.
- Coordinating directly with VDOT and other agencies for preparing bid documents and management of the bidding process.
- Representing Michael Baker International at project meetings with agency staff, clients, and contractors.
- Preparing timely and accurately written reports and meeting minutes to document findings, decisions made, and actions required.
- Reviewing consultant/contractor submittals for approval.
- Representing Michael Baker International at professional networking events.
PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- The candidate shall have extensive experience and a complete understanding of VDOT Traffic Engineering processes and procedures.
- The candidate shall have Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, transportation planning or a related field
- PE license required
- 10+ years of relevant work experience. Master's degree in relevant discipline may substitute for up to one year of work experience.
- Experience in the development of signal design, pavement marking, and signing plans.
- Experience using traffic analysis software for planning and design purposes.
- Experience in prioritizing multiple concurrent projects while still delivering timely and accurate results.
- Experience in the development of project cost estimates.
- Working knowledge and understanding of industry related analyses and development criteria/concepts.
- Must have strong technical writing skills and able to develop documents in Microsoft Office.
- Ability to interact cooperatively and collaboratively with others as a team, including those holding divergent and/or opposing views and goals.
- Computer knowledge/experience with Microsoft Office (Word/Excel/PowerPoint/Teams).
COMPENSATION
The approximate compensation range for this position $110,000 - $150,000 per year. This compensation range is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Actual compensation is dependent upon factors such as education, qualifications, experience, skillset, and physical work location.
