This position supervises/manages: Veterinary Technicians, Veterinary Technician Assistants 


Job Summary: The Medical Supervisor is responsible for the daily medical operations of the SPCA of Texas in a manner that allows for the highest quality of care and medicine provided to our animals.


Summary of Essential Responsibilities:

    Performs all work in accordance with SPCA of Texas protocols;

    Oversees the daily medical operations including inventory management, medical treatments, and staff management.

    Provides support to the work performed and as directed by the Shelter Veterinarians, Chief Veterinarian, and Senior Manager, Operations.

    Actively engage with volunteers in such a way that provides support for our volunteers and staff and proactively improves our volunteer program.  

    Be an ambassador for the SPCA of Texas, sharing the work and mission with your friends and family and be knowledgeable of the various ways to support our work.


Summary of Essential Job Tasks:

    Maintains open communication with the Chief Veterinarian, Shelter Veterinarians, and Operation Directors/Managers regarding work performed by the Veterinary Technicians and Veterinary Technician Assistants. 

    Facilitates and maintains open communication with all teams within the SPCA of Texas.

    Assist in maintaining all medical services across all SPCA of Texas locations. 

    Ensure the humane treatment and handling of animals by training staff in proper techniques and Fear Free methods, while overseeing maintenance of a clean and healthy environment for all shelter animals.

    Maintains an appropriate level of pharmacy inventory and supplies and places orders when needed. 

    Participates in daily shelter operation rounds.

    Completes and submits medical and general supply PO/PR’s in a timely manner and in accordance with SPCA of Texas protocol.

    Assists with daily shelter medical operations, including feeding, cleaning, medicating, and preparing for/recovering from surgery animals under care of the SPCA of Texas.

    Coordinates with Shelter Veterinarians, Shelter Managers, Intake team, and Population Coordinator to determine treatment capacity and update as needed in order to meet animal movement goals.

    Oversees any annex/medical volunteers and communicates volunteer needs, including shift times, responsibilities, and training requirements, to the Volunteer Department.

    Trains staff, volunteers, and others, as needed, on medical treatments, procedures, and services.

    Recruit, hire, develop and coach and counsel staff members to reduce turnover and increase engagement and morale.

    Protect sensitive information regarding animals under protective custody to ensure successful outcomes.

    Other duties as assigned by the Senior Manager, Operations. 


Abilities Required:

Applicant Information:

    The individual performing this job may be required to work more than 8 hours in a day or 40 hours in a week.  Shift times may vary and include weekend hours.

    Previous veterinary technician experience required.



Normally scheduled 5 days per week, 8 hours per day between the hours of 7am and 7pm.
