If that purpose resonates with you, we invite you to consider this opportunity. The City is seeking a qualified Zoning Officer to join our Code Compliance Division in the Executive Department. This position is responsible for the field enforcement of the City’s Land Development Ordinance (LDO) as it relates to zoning and other ordinances, as well as for sign permit applications and enforcement. Working closely with other compliance staff, you’ll ensure that properties throughout Greensboro align with approved development standards — keeping neighborhoods safe, attractive, and in compliance.

Compensation and Benefits:

 The hiring salary range is $45,017 – $59,223, Full salary range $45,017 - $80,557. The City of Greensboro offers an excellent benefits package that supports the health, financial security, and work-life balance of employees. The work schedule is Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM, with occasional weekends.

About the Role: 

The Zoning Officer ensures compliance with the City’s zoning ordinances, sign regulations, and conditional aspects of land development approvals. You will investigate complaints, document findings, issue notices, and provide updates on active cases. The role also involves presenting evidence to boards or commissions and keeping accurate case records in the City’s code compliance system.

Key Responsibilities:

Enforce the City’s Land Development Ordinance and related zoning requirements; review and process sign permit applications and enforce sign regulations; respond to complaints or reports of zoning violations and issue notices within set timelines; manage an active caseload of zoning and related ordinance violations; maintain accurate case records in the City’s software system; present evidence for appeals to boards or commissions as needed; collaborate with other local code compliance staff on nuisance, vehicle, or minimum housing cases; attend community or neighborhood meetings as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Qualifications:
 Minimum qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or GED, 
  • 1–3 years of zoning, code compliance, or similar enforcement experience,
  • Valid NC Driver’s License, 
  • Experience interpreting and enforcing land development or zoning ordinances, 
  • Data entry skills and experience with Microsoft Office,
  • Excellent customer service and conflict management skills.
Preferred qualifications:
  • 3+ years of direct zoning experience, 
  • bilingual skills, 
  • completion of the NC Law & Administration Course by NCDOI within 18 months of hire,
  • ICC Zoning Inspector Certification (to be obtained within 18 months of hire), 
  •  Mental Health First Aid Certification (to be obtained within 18 months of hire).
