POSITION SUMMARY: S/he is responsible for the safety of patients prior to and during transport to medical care facilities. This includes provision of basic as well as advanced life support measures required to stabilize critically ill or injured patients. This position requires proficiency in critical care and knowledge of the adaptations necessary for patient management in the aircraft during flight. Additionally, the Flight Paramedic is accountable to perform community/customer outreach, and for the completion of base duties as assigned. The Flight Paramedic must also be familiar with aircraft operating procedures and safety practices. The ability to establish positive interpersonal and professional relationships is essential.
REPORTS TO: Director of Clinical Flight Operations
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Acquires and maintains a strong knowledge base in critical care practice. The Flight Paramedic must be able to stabilize and manage patients involved
in air transportation, which include:
a. Field emergency stabilization
b. ICU inter-hospital intervention
c. Management of specific aeromedical problems in flight
2. Acquires and maintains extensive knowledge of policies, procedures, and protocols related to OptimuMedicine flight program.
3. Has knowledge of the applicable sections of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations.
4. Is proficient in the use of radios and giving concise reports.
5. Responsible for checking bags, equipment, and aircraft at beginning of the shift, immediately following shift briefing.
6. Ensures base daily duties including base cleanliness, will be completed in a timely fashion.
7. Upon activation on a flight, the Flight Paramedic will respond immediately and safely to the aircraft or facility.
8. On arrival at referring location, introduces transport personnel, assists with stabilization procedures and preparation of the patient for flight.
9. During transport, the Flight Paramedic will be an active participant in the Air Medical Resource Management Process.
10. Continually monitors patient status in coordination with the Flight Nurse and intervenes as necessary.
11. Maintains written records of patient condition and care provided according to established standards and guidelines.
12. Assists in additional patient care as required on arrival to the receiving facility. Transfers all records and reports to receiving personnel.
13. After transport of the patient is complete, the Flight Paramedic is responsible for working in coordination with the Flight Nurse to restock flight bags and
aircraft, as well as clean and maintain equipment so that it is ready for further flights. Any problems with equipment and/or patient management will be
immediately report.
14. Completes flight records and all documents per OptimuMedicine policy
15. Participates in post-flight debriefing with Flight Nurse, Pilots and Dispatchers
16. Attends all scheduled flight team meetings and classes as required by Leadership.
17. Participates in teaching and training of new hires on orientation.
18. Participates in public education programs and public relations functions.
19. Arrives to the place of duty before assigned shift well rested and ready to assume flight status.
19. All charting in EMS charts and the uploading of pertinent documentation will be completed within 48 hours of the flight
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
1. Three (3) years of experience in a busy 911 system and/or critical care setting.
2. BLS, ACLS, PALS, approved trauma course
3. NRP within six (6) months of hire date.
4. FP-C within eighteen (18) months of hire date.
5. Paramedic license in the state served by the assigned flight program.
