GENERAL SUMMARY
Works to improve home/school connections and communication. Plans and implements parent involvement activities and assists parents with the education of their children. Works closely with school teachers and staff to increase student success. Reports to the Principal
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Other duties may be assigned.)
Under direction, serves as a liaison between a school and the local community.
Assists teachers and certified staff members with related educational programs for parents.
Visits families of students to provide information on the programs and services available through the school and school district.
Interviews family members and students to gather information used to determine eligibility for programs and services.
Completes forms, questionnaires and other necessary documentation to enroll students, document their activities, prepare correspondence, reports, and other documentation necessary for student enrollment.
Identifies students in need of supportive or special services and refers students to appropriate personnel and/or agencies to address their needs. Follows up on the referrals to assure that necessary services are provided.
Establishes and maintains a parent center at the school site.
Helps the school involve parents in the activities of their children.
Encourages parents to participate in group discussions and activities.
Shares information with parents concerning the school program, policies, regulations and activities.
Arranges visits, conferences, workshops, and other activities to promote the goals and objectives of the school program.
Serves as liaison between the parents and the school with social agencies committed to the welfare of the students.
Develops rapport with students, their parents and school officials in the interest of promoting student progress.
Interacts with others in a respectful and cooperative manner at all times.
Willingly performs other duties as assigned.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
An Associate’s Degree from an accredited post-secondary institution or 60 hours of college credit. Experience working with families, parents and students. Experience working with social agencies.
Knowledge:
Has thorough knowledge of the methods, procedures and policies of the school and District as they pertain to the performance of duties; is knowledgeable in the laws, standards and regulations pertaining to the specific duties and responsibilities of the Parent Liaison; knowledge of the school and school community.
Skills/Effort:
Is organized and able to maintain accurate records and reports as required; is able to develop and maintain positive, cooperative working relationships with parents, students and staff; is able to coordinate and implement special activities, events and meetings for parents; has the ability to plan, organize and prioritize daily assignments and work activities; Knows how to keep families informed of school news and events; excellent communication and interpersonal skills required.
Working Conditions:
School/office environment with limited exposure to environmental conditions; physical demands are restricted to general activities requiring movement/lifting items weighing up to ten pounds. Routine local travel required.
