The Role:

The Direct Support Professional (DSP) is responsible for teaching and supporting adults in developing essential daily living and social skills within Chapel Haven’s Residential Program. As a Direct Support Professional, you will play a vital role in delivering the social communicative competence curriculum, helping residents build independence, confidence, and self-advocacy. The Direct Support Professional fosters an encouraging and supportive environment where residents can develop the skills needed to live more independently and lead fulfilling lives.

 

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Teach residents healthy nutrition and meal planning, including safe food storage, meal preparation, and proper use of kitchen equipment (e.g., stove, microwave, grill).
  • Instruct residents in apartment maintenance skills, such as maintaining a clean and organized living space, safe use of cleaning products, and general home safety practices.
  • Provide guidance in personal hygiene and grooming, including showering, shaving, hair care, oral hygiene, and scheduling personal care appointments.
  • Support residents in completing laundry tasks using step-by-step instruction, task analysis, and checklists.
  • Teach problem-solving and relationship-building skills, promoting appropriate social interactions and community engagement.
  • Complete case notes, checklists, and required documentation daily as directed by the supervisor.
  • Administer medications in accordance with certification and organizational protocols.
  • Provide transportation to residents as needed, which may include the use of a personal vehicle.

 

Minimum Education Requirements:

· Bachelor’s degree in human services or related field; or

· At least 4 years of experience working with individuals with learning disabilities or related needs.

 

 

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

· Ability to obtain State of Connecticut Medication Administration Certification.

· Valid CT driver’s license (Public Service License required or must be obtained).

· Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team.

· Strong communication, observation, and interpersonal skills.

· Positive, patient, and supportive approach to teaching and mentoring.

· Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods.
