Position Overview:

Reporting to the Director of Hamel Health Services, the Nurse Practitioner is a highly detail-oriented individual with experience in the medical working environment. The primary duties of this role include: providing comprehensive care to Merrimack College students, including assessment, diagnosis, and treatment, and assisting in coordination of care with outside providers or emergency services as needed.


Primary Description:

  • Responsible for the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of the Merrimack College community, utilizing established practice guidelines as outlined by the Health Center.

  • Utilize physical assessment skills with all students presenting to the Health Center for medical care, including the ordering of diagnostic testing and specialty referrals. Provide coordination of care with outside providers as needed.

  • Respond to emergency situations at the Health Center providing first aid treatment and assessment and evaluation of the need for offsite care. Initiate immediate transfer to an emergency room as needed or referral to an urgent care setting.

  • Based on clinical assessment of student, prescribe medications with the guidance of evidence based practice.

  • Maintain patient confidentiality, obtain consent when discussing patient care with parents/legal guardians. Document all medical information using the Medicat EHR.

  • Assist Health Center staff with student immunization compliance as needed, following Massachusetts immunization requirements for college admission.

  • Communicate with the Director of Hamel Health Center as needed, including to inform and communicate clinical problems and student concerns. Participate in Health Center staff meetings and clinical conferences.

  • Collaborate with the Director of Hamel Health Center, The Office of Counseling and Wellness Education, and members of Student Affairs Regarding promotion of mental and physical health.

  • Provide quality care to a diverse population; observe and obey all safety rules, practices, and regulations; incorporate ACHA standards and recommendations in to the health service as appropriate.

  • Maintain all current licenses with the Massachusetts Department of Health, Division of Food and Drugs, and the United States Department of Justice, Drug Enforcement Agency, Basic Life Support and will be responsible for tracking and monitoring all renewal dates.

  • Communicate clinical problems and patient concerns to the Director of Hamel Health Services.

  • Work with Hamel Health staff to review, update, and develop policies and procedures and educational materials.

  • Provide wellness and educational outreach to students outside of Hamel Health.

  • Participate in weekly clinical team meetings to review cases as needed

  • Participate in Student Life campus activities after hours as needed and able.

  • Participate in Hamel staff meetings and department meetings as needed.

  • Assist with data entry into the electronic health record.


Position Qualifications:

  • Certification as Massachusetts Nurse Practitioner

  • Current CPR certification

  • 3-5 years clinical experience in primary care, urgent care, or emergency room

  • Experience with older adolescent/young adult/college health population desirable

  • Possess the expected knowledge, skills, and abilities of a professional Nurse Practitioner.

  • Have the adaptability to provide a high level of nursing care in challenging and frequently changing situations.

  • Competent in computer skills including Word, Excel, Google Documents, and Scheduling/Calendars.

  • Comfortable making nursing assessments, triaging students, documenting and providing care, health education, and follow up to adolescents and young adults.


Licensing Requirements:

  • Current Massachusetts license to practice as a registered nurse in the expanded role as Nurse Practitioner

  • Current MA MCSR and DEA prescriptive license
