POSITION SUMMARY

The Assistant Transportation manager will lead drivers for Harlow’s School Bus Service, Inc business. This will include driver leadership, recruiting, retention, training and development.  This includes assisting the account to reach goals and achieve P&L objectives.  With the guidance of the Transportation Manager, this person will develop a strategic as well tactical driver plan to meet growth and profitability objectives

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Understand and control cost structure to ensure a high level of profitability.  Set measurable goals for all aspects of running a successful operation.
  2. Drive accountability for improvement and positive change based upon business objectives and desire to grow the accounts.
  3. Ensure an entrepreneurial spirit and high work ethic that emulates throughout the organization.  Ability to demand more than the status quo.
  4. Develop a balanced approach that promotes asset utilization, safety, service and driver success.  Mentor others within the organization to promote and pursue a deeper level of transportation excellence.
  5. Responsible for implementing new methods of managing drivers, providing customer service, and recruiting drivers at the local level.
  6. Responsible for leading drivers to be a safe and legal.
  7. Development of drivers to meet business goals and promote profitable growth.  Facilitate actions to improve driver performance and improve safety results.
  8. Execute recruiting strategy to support the service and growth of new and existing accounts.
  9. Establish solid business relationships and maintains open, accurate and timely two-way communications with drivers and internal associates.
  10. Responsible for ensuring all drivers have qualifications and are current with all regulatory requirements.
  11. Encourages professional driver appearance and behavior.
  12. Ensure all preventive maintenance is performed (meet or exceed State and Harlow’s requirements).
  1. This position will be required to understand the performance of maintenance and repairs on gas and diesel powered vehicles as well as all other systems and components found within the vehicle.
  1. Work with Transportation Manager to develop recruiting plan to hire and retain experienced drivers. 
  2. Responsible to ensure Driver Associates comply with HR requirements (EEOC, Affirmative Action and other employment rules and regulations).
  3. Responsible for DOT and OSHA compliance for all location(s) within area of operational responsibility.
  4. Ensure that all Driver Qualifications on location are meeting FMCSA regulations.
  5. Ensure all preventive maintenance services are performed in compliance with corporate plan.
  6. Performs other task as assigned by leadership.

 

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

Education:  Bachelors Degree  in Business or Transportation and/or  5 years of experience in the trasporation industry.

Experience:  

  1. Minimum of 5 years successful operations or transportation experience.
  2. Four year degree, or established experience in business or transportation.
  3. Ability to understand and implement P&L, cost control and revenue generation concepts.
  4. Excellent problem analysis and critical thinking skills.
  5. Ability to lead and develop a high performance environment.
  6. Willing to push costs down and grow with entrepreneurial drive.
  1. Excellent communication and collaboration skills to ensure success

  • Written Communication: Strong writing skills using good spelling, punctuation, grammar; detail-oriented in editing written documents; ability to present numerical and statistical data effectively; and ability to accurately interpret and communicate written information.
  • Planning and Organizing: Ability to prioritize and plan work activities to ensure the timely completion of projects and development of realistic action plans.
  • Quality: Demonstrate accuracy and thoroughness and monitor own work to ensure quality.
  • Adaptability: Able to quickly adapt and respond to a rapidly changing work environment and manage competing demands in a productive manner.
  • Dependability: Demonstrated ability to consistently be at work and on time as scheduled, follow instructions, respond to management direction, and solicit feedback to improve performance.
