Purpose Statement
The job of Health Room Assistant is done for the purpose/s of providing health room organization and assistance in the implementation of the district health services program for the Health Services department.
Essential Functions:
- Adheres to confidentiality expectations (e.g. HIPPA, FERPA, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring security and confidentiality of staff and students private information are met with district, state and federal guidelines;
- Administers first aid and prescription medications to students (under the direction of a health care professional) for the purpose of meeting immediate health care needs within established guidelines;
- Assists with nursing tasks as trained and delegated (e.g. seizure care, screenings, blood sugar monitoring, insulin dosage on pump or pen, vital signs, utilizing clean technique, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring safety of students and staff;
- Assists administrators, staff, students, public, parents, vendors, etc. for the purpose of providing appropriate communication, information and/or direction as may be required;
- Assists with processing of documents, forms, mailings, and materials (e.g. care plans for field trips and sporting events, immunization tracking, etc.) for the purpose of disseminating information to appropriate parties;
- Attends department and/or in-service meetings (e.g. student health-related meetings, training programs, etc.) for the purpose of gathering information required to perform functions;
- Communicates with school staff and public (e.g. nurses, principal, parents, office personnel, maintenance, cafeteria staff, etc.) for the purpose of conveying and/or receiving information required to perform job functions including disease and other areas of concern;
- Enters health information in the student information system (e.g. health room visits, immunization records, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring accurate information is documented under regulations and guidelines;
- Filling of care plans and medication orders (e.g. health services related forms, documentation, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring accurate and timely charting and documentation;
- Maintains manual and electronic documents files and records (e.g. letters, medication logs, forms, reports, etc.) for the purpose of providing up-to-date information and/or historical reference in accordance with established administrative guidelines and legal requirements;
- Maintains inventory of supplies and materials (e.g. forms, health room supplies, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring items' availability;
- Monitors students referred for illness for the purpose of ensuring student welfare and maintaining a secure office environment;
- Responds to emergencies or other health-related situations for the purpose of meeting student health care needs.
Other Functions:
- Performs other related duties as assigned (e.g. answering phones, backup support to office when available, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the school.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
SKILLS are required to perform multiple tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: operating standard office equipment; preparing and maintaining accurate records.; administer first aid and/or prescribed medications; customer service.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; understand written procedures, write routine documents, and speak clearly; and understand multi-step written and oral instructions. Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: codes/laws/rules/regulations/policies; grammar, spelling and punctuation; office machines; telephone etiquette; health standards; office practices; school safety and security practices.
ABILITY is required to schedule activities, meetings, and/or events; gather, collate, and/or classify data; and use job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined and similar processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals; work with similar types of data; and utilize job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data may require independent interpretation; and problem solving with equipment is limited. Specific ability-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adapting to changing work priorities; accuracy and attention to detail; maintaining confidentiality; working with frequent interruptions; effective verbal communication skills; diffuse argumentative behavior; organizing tasks; working as part of a team.
Responsibility
Responsibilities include: working under direct supervision using standardized routines; providing information and/or advising others; operating within a defined budget. Utilization of some resources from other work units is often required to perform the job's functions. There is some opportunity to impact the organization’s services.
Work Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 60% sitting, 20% walking, 20% standing. The job is performed under conditions with exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.
