Metering Division: The Metering Division is responsible for the timely and accurate reading of more than 18,000 water meters every month between the 10th and 25th of the month. Metering falls under the Finance Department to facilitate the close working relationship with utility billing staff and to ensure accurate monthly billing.
General Description: The City of Jacksonville is seeking temporary help to perform intermediate semiskilled work reading and repairing water meters; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Metering Supervisor. This temporary position with the City of Jacksonville which will run through October 27, 2025, for an estimated 280 hours.The salary posted is the full hourly range for this position. The starting hourly rate is expected to be in the range of $14.76 - $19.19 per hour depending on qualifications.
Position Duties
Reading and repairing meters; recording consumption; connecting/disconnecting service; preparing and maintaining records. - Reads meters on assigned routes and records consumption.
- Keeps records of meters read and reports meters not accessible for reading.
- Checks to see that meters are correctly installed and functioning properly; checks for meter defects and leaks.
- Repairs and tests meters; records change outs.
- Responds to customer inquiries; discusses high bills with customers.
- Processes service orders; disconnects/reconnects service as needed.
- Assists with office operations as required.
- Obtains special readings as required; delivers bills and door knockers.
- Maintains and repairs meters; removes and resets various sizes of meter boxes.
- Sets new meters; cleans and tests meters; locks up meters.
- Maintains records on meter change-outs; keeps inventory of parts.
- Performs related tasks as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school. Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina.
Other Qualifications
General knowledge of the methods and procedures involved in the reading of meters and recording consumption; general knowledge of the geography and street locations of the city; ability to accurately read and record consumption; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public; ability to walk for continuous periods under varying climatic conditions.
