About the Department

Special Assignment for Police Officers.  
Pay is $1.00 per hour.

Under general supervision, the incumbent is a specially trained law enforcement officer who patrols and enforces laws from a motorcycle, rather than a patrol car.  

In addition to duties as a Police Officer, the Motor Police Officer will be assigned specialized responsibilities related to criminal investigations. 

As a Motor Police Officer, you will:
  • Respond and investigate traffic accidents including those involving suspected DUIs.
  • Investigate drivers suspected of operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol or illegal substances. 
  • Document accident and crime scenes using photography, diagrams, and/or specialized software; conducts interviews with individuals and eyewitnesses.
  • Monitor traffic to ensure compliance with traffic laws and promotes safe driving practices.
  • Communicate complaints and emergency requests to appropriate dispatch agencies.
  • Respond to all traffic-related incidents, including pursuits and the arrest of fugitives.
  • Direct traffic at accident scenes, malfunctioning intersections, and during high-traffic situations.
  • Issue citations or warnings to motorists who violate vehicle and traffic laws.
  • Manage traffic flow and implements detours during emergencies.
  • Provide road condition updates and assistance to motorists as needed.
  • Offer security and escort services for official state functions, motorcades, and funeral processions involving public safety personnel.

Minimum Qualifications

Education, Training and Experience:

  • Must have completed probation and have a minimum of one year of experience as a solo Police Officer. 
  • ·Must be able to successfully complete the Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) specialized Police Motorcycle Training Course within 6 months of appointment.
  • Required to complete the Advanced Collision Investigation Training, and Collision Reconstruction Training within 2 years of appointment.

Licenses and Certifications:
All required licenses and certifications must be maintained throughout employment.
  • A valid Arizona Driver’s License
  • Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board (AZPOST) Certification as Peace Officer and currently in good standing.

Special Requirements:
  • Residency in the United States and within 25 miles of the City of San Luis

Desired/Preferred:
  • Bilingual in Spanish
  • Ability to work outside of regular hours including evenings, weekend and holidays as needed.

Assignment Terms:
This is a temporary special assignment, full time, non-exempt for a duration of three years which may be extended for an additional year by the Police Chief.
