About the Department
Performs a broad range of structural, facility and grounds maintenance duties relevant to the construction, general repair and maintenance of assigned county property, structures and equipment.
Position Duties
• Acts as crew leader while performing duties with facility and parks construction personnel. • Performs construction, maintenance and repairs (i.e., painting, masonry, carpentry, grounds maintenance, plumbing, electrical, mechanical) on structures, facilities, equipment and other county property. • Reads blueprints, diagrams and sketches and implements necessary construction or repairs from these plans. • Performs calculations (i.e., mixing proportions, measuring angles and distances, calculating square footage). • Operates manual, electrical and gas-powered tools and equipment (i.e., shovels, mixers, sprayers, drills, hammers). • Operates skid loaders, backhoe, farm tractor with front loader, mini skid loader, and dump truck. • Installs playground equipment and associated surfacing, including concrete and rubber material. • Prepares material lists for assigned projects; picks up material for projects. • Assists in training of departmental staff in methods and procedures (i.e., safety, use of equipment). • Maintains and ensures the safe operating condition of equipment, tools and vehicles. • Performs record maintenance duties, (i.e., work orders, materials and supplies utilized, cost estimates, labor required, maintenance logs, fuel logs). • Recognizes and reports any detected deterioration with facilities, structures and equipment, determines repair and maintenance needs and reports them to supervisor. • Operates county vehicle in the performance of duties. • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Education, Training, and Experience: High school diploma or GED supplemented by four (4) years of construction experience that provides the ability to perform skilled to semi-skilled tasks in the trade; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Licenses and/or Certifications: Requires a valid driver license. May require a Class “B” commercial driver license (“CDL”), depending on assignment.
Other Qualifications
Physical Requirements: Must be able to operate various manual, electrical and gas-powered equipment and tools. Must be able to exert 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. Must be able to traverse irregular or uneven terrain frequently. Requires prolonged periods of standing/walking. Requires the ability to position self for work in confined areas or work overhead. Must be able to ascend/descend ladders, stairs, and scaffolding. Must be able to work for sustained periods of exposure to outside atmospheric conditions. Physical demands are in excess of sedentary work. Language Ability: Requires the ability to communicate effectively in English, including the ability to convey, record, and exchange information, receiving assignments, and/or directions from supervisors. Must be able to explain procedures and to give, receive, and follow oral and/or written instructions. Must be able to speak with clarity, and to articulate information to others. Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply principles of common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions; to deal with problems involving concrete variables in situations where standardization exists; to make independent judgments in the absence of supervisor; to acquire knowledge of topics related to primary occupation Numerical Aptitude: Must be able to add, subtract, multiply and divide; determine weight; calculate decimals and percentages; compute ratio and proportion Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress when confronted with emergencies or tight deadlines. Requires the ability to exercise consistent tact and courtesy when in frequent contact with various professionals, county staff, and the general public.
