Job Title: Machine Shop Manager

Position Summary:                                                                               

NLB Corporation is seeking a hands-on, results-driven Machine Shop Manager to lead daily operations within our machining department. This role requires someone who is not only a strong leader but also highly involved on the shop floor (approximately 50% of the time). The ideal candidate will have a strong background in machining, programming, and tooling, with the ability to process work efficiently through the shop, support Quality Control, and contribute to continuous improvement efforts in cost reduction, scrap reduction, and productivity.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage day-to-day operations of the machine shop, including scheduling, workflow, and personnel management.
  • Maintain a 50% presence on the shop floor to provide hands-on support, troubleshoot issues, and ensure alignment with production goals.
  • Process work orders through the shop efficiently, balancing priorities and minimizing downtime.
  • Assist in CNC programming and editing when needed to support machinists and ensure accuracy.
  • Monitor tooling usage and make informed decisions to improve tool life, reduce scrap, and control costs.
  • Collaborate with Quality Control and support first-piece inspection, in-process checks, and final part validation.
  • Apply strong knowledge of GD&T and quality standards to ensure parts meet customer and internal requirements.
  • Coach, train, and mentor shop personnel to build a strong, cross-functional team.
  • Identify opportunities for cost savings and lead continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Conduct ROI (Return on Investment) analysis for new equipment or tooling purchases.
  • Ensure safe work practices and maintain a clean, organized shop environment.
  • Utilize Microsoft Excel and Word to manage reports, schedules, and documentation.
  • Participate in or lead cross-functional meetings with Engineering, QC, and Purchasing to address shop priorities and challenges.

 

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 10 years of experience in a machine shop environment, with at least 3 years in a leadership role.
  • Strong background in CNC machining (milling, turning, multi-axis preferred).
  • Experience with CNC programming (G-code, conversational, or CAM software).
  • Proficient with Microsoft Excel and Word; ability to create and maintain production-related documentation and reports.
  • Solid understanding of tooling selection, usage, and optimization.
  • Working knowledge of Quality Control processes, GD&T, and inspection methods.
  • Excellent problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to coach and lead a team, resolve conflicts, and drive accountability.
  • Familiarity with ERP systems and job tracking is a plus.
  • ROI analysis experience for capital equipment is a strong asset.

 

Working Conditions:

  • Manufacturing floor environment: standing and walking required for extended periods.
  • Requires occasional lifting of materials and tooling.
  • May involve exposure to noise, coolant, and machinery.
  • Occasional overtime may be required based on production demands.
